Very sad indeed. I don't understand young adults and their involvement with drugs. It ruins your life and Mackey had a bright future ahead of him.

I know that he is 18 and that is technically an adult but he is still a high school kid and hopefully, they can get him help so that he can go forward. Some kids get in over their head and do not understand the consequences of their actions.

 

Prayers to him and everyone involved to get this kid straightened out.

Mackey was always polite and yes sir, no sir while I was around him last year. Hopefully he can get his life turned around.

 

Yes, this was a huge mistake. However, lets call the young man what he is: a criminal.

If he's in jail I doubt they have a basketball game release program.

You'd be surprised. I was talking to someone either in Wisconsin or Michigan and that exact scenario came up. A judge was getting blasted because he let the star football player out for games.

A highly-touted prep basketball star who has committed to Indiana has been arrested and charged with trafficking in cocaine in Kentucky.

 

Bud Mackey, 18, a 6-foot-4 guard, was arrested at about 5 p.m. Friday and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance within 1,000 yards of a school and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine), first offense, according to officials at the Scott County jail in Georgetown, Ky. He was being held Friday night on a $10,000 cash bond.

I feel bad for the kid. The same situation hapend to one of my best friends in the early 90's he was a baseball player who would have been drafted in the first round and lost a lot of money by doing what he did. I just pray for Bud and hope everything works out for him

I played against Mackey in H.S. This is very surprising to me. He was always a hard worker on the court and I respected his effort. However, this is just unacceptable.

If this kid did not have a scholarship offer and if it was on BGP reporting his bust, would not most of us not be "wishing him well?" Isn't this a sign of how we're offtrack when it comes to priorities?

Let's be honest here. Tubby didn't turn his back on Southall. It was a case of Southall not living up to his end on the scholarship offer.

This isn't about Hicks and he does not need your arrogent pitty. Its about Bud and the mistake he has made. Don't kick people when their down. His high school and D1 college days may be over but he still needs mature and get back the respect he has lost from the people he has let down. Bud Mackey is not the first and he certainly will not be the last. I pray that the Mackey family finds strength through the next three months.

Southall

Arrested in May 2000 for delivery and possession of marijuana. Arrested in April 2001 for violating his bond by running away from police. (Those two mistakes cost Southall scholarships at Kentucky and Georgia Tech and landed him on three years of probation.)

 

At ULL in 2003 Southall played well but then was suspended for academic reasons and went afoul of his probation by testing positive for alcohol and marijuana, and skipping meetings with his probation counselor. That earned him a sentence of one year in jail.

 

 

From Wisconsin. Southall had been set to play for the University of Kentucky when he was arrested in May 2000 for delivery and possession of marijuana. He was convicted in 2000, then violated probation and was sentenced to a year in jail. ...In June 2000, Southall entered into a diversion agreement on the charges. Georgia Tech, which made it to the NCAA Final Four this season, later offered him a scholarship for 2001. That, too, was lost when Southall was arrested in April 2001 for violating his bond when he ran from police officers. The diversion agreement was revoked in July 2001 and Southall was placed on probation for three years. The West Salem graduate ended up at Louisiana-Lafayette, where he was Sunbelt Conference Freshman Player of the Year for the 2001-02 season. Academic problems, however, limited him to only one semester of college basketball since that time. In the past year, he said, he spent much of his time caring for his pregnant girlfriend.

If he was arrested at school, that would have to be twice as embarrasing. If this is like most high schools am sure lots of people knew this was going on. This should get some serious jail time, guess kids think they won't get caught and most don't.

One bad decision? Unless this just happened to be the first day the kid ever had crack on him, its not "one bad decision." Its "a bad decision that he got busted for."
