I have always said this is one of the most incredible sports stats I have ever seen.

Brohm and Couch are the best QBs. Period. Did either of them play defense, kick, returns, etc? Who was the best player, not QB?

Here's the thing with Frisk. Senior year, he played in the entire game THREE times. The first game of the season against St. X in the Thoroughbred Bowl the state semi's against Bell and the state finals against Hoptown. He sat at least the entire fourth quarter of most of the other 11 games. He was hurt for one game. That's almost like he would've played in another 2 3/4 games. He would've broken a lot of records...

 

One of Skirvin's old coaches was talking about how he didn't get to see Frisk all year and thought Jason was the better back. He was able to see one of the playoff games and left there knowing he was a distant second. He was good though...

I can't decide between Brian Brohm and Tim Couch. I mean, Brohm was surrounded by superior talent and put up big numbers in the largest class. However, Couch put up HUGE numbers with inferior talent. Not sure which is worth more.

 

Oh, and no one will EVER convince me that Shaun Alexander was a better HIGH SCHOOL running back than Justin Frisk...No way!!!

 

 

He actually had some good receivers. I played against Frisk and Alexander and Alexander was the better player hands down. I actually know Frisk well and have never "met" Alexander and it isn't even close (although Frisk is the second best KY RB I've seen).

On October 29, 1921, Centre College beat Harvard 6-0. At the time, Harvard was a football powerhouse and had won 25 straight games. The Associated Press in 1950 considered this the biggest upset in college football in the half century. Centre's Bo McMillin, who played high school ball at Somerset High School, scored on a 32 yard touchdown run in the third quarter to become the hero for that day. McMillin went on to lead Centre to a formidable 25-2 record leading into this game. He became Coach and General Manager for the Detroit Lions in the NFL. Then became coach at Indiana University. He has to be mentioned as one of the All-Time greats.

When you talk about best high school players, Alexander isn't even the best running back to play in Kentucky.

 

 

I disagree 100%. BC didn't even throw the ball. They lined up Maney and Alexander and handed it to them time after time after time. Everyone knew 9 times out of 10 where the ball was going, but for the most part it didn't matter.

I'd have to put Don Gullett in the argument. As far as high school accolades there are few in the countries history, much the Bluegrass State that can match his career. By far the most versatile athlete to ever play in the state, he could've picked his career in Baseball, Football, or Basketball and would've had a Hall of Fame career. Here is a great article about Gullett that tells plenty about this great athlete. I've known Gullett personally for years and I can tell you aside from being a great athlete in his day he is a great guy. If media coverage was like it is today, Gullett would be on every magazine, Blog, and website coming and going.

Tim Couch could have been first team all state as a Safety. This guy got offered a dual scholarship to play football and basketball at the University of Michigan. I saw the offer. It had both Lloyd Carr and Steve Fisher's signatures. He also was offered a basketball scholarship from Duke, UNLV, Illinois, and Arkansas along with many other schools.

The easiest way for me to figure out the argument between the two is to reverse the rolls. Tim Couch got in trouble alot due to the lack of offensive linemen, and had to improvise alot. His athletic ability was tested alot every game. I just don't think Brohm had that kind of game in him.

If Couch could have been able to sit in the pocket all day long, that would have been something to see.

Also, Couch was a hell of a pitcher during his younger years. He was not permitted to play baseball. Coach Whitaker was the baseball coach his Junior year and he and few of the other players went out for baseball and Whitaker told them to get back up to the weight room. So he probably could have got drafted as well.

This is how I feel about it.

 

Brian is spectacular and may well end up being better than Hornung, but until then I am going to say the Golden Boy.

 

As much as I never liked Hornung back in the day (he got all the girls!) I have to give Best High School football player honors to him hands down. Most people don't realize he not only played QB at Flaget he also punted, kicked field goals, pats and even played some on defense, if it was a close game.

 

In College at Notre Dame he played QB, HB, DE, punted, kicked off, kicked FGs, kicked PATs and was on the kick off return team. In fact in his final College game against USC he ran back a kick of 95 yards playing with TWO broken thumbs. He won the Heisman in 1956 (how many others from KY have won the Heisman?)

 

His ability to "do it all" continued into the NFL...Most people don't realize he held the NFL record for the most points scored by an individual player in a single season for 46yrs until LaDaian Tomlinson broke it last year. Just an FYI the Packers only played 12 games in 1960 when it set the record and he played RB.

I might even venture to say he played on the best NFL team that ever existed the 1961 Packers team. He was like a greek god among men when he was in High School, he in his high School prime against any of the others mentioned in theirs, its no contest. Between Brohm and Hornung, Hornung wins because of toughness alone. He took lickings and kept on ticking. NFL Player of the year twice in '60 and '61 thats an honor Brohm won't see twice. He will be a great one but he is not Paul Hornung, although Hornung himself has said Brohm is the closest to date.

 

As much as he got bad press for the booze the women etc there were things he did the press ignored that truly told you what kind of guy he was.He sold his Heisman Trophy for a quarter of a million dollars in order to endow scholarships for Notre Dame students. He urged the board of regents to loosen academic standards so more African American athletes could be accepted into Notre Dame, he warned them their football program would suffer if they continued with academic practices designed to exlude them.

What about Herbie Phelps, of My Old Kentucky Home, I think? As I remember he was a very good running back and maybe led the state in scoring but I don't believe he is in the same category as some of the players mentioned earlier.
