Tim Couch went toe to toe with Tennessee and Peyton Manning his sophomore year. Both had over 500 yards passing I believe. The next year I believe UK would have had another great game with UT, but that was the week after the wreck killing one of Couch's best friends, another teammate, and injuring his center because of drunk driving.

The point Couch never had resources in high school, college, or the pros (before his shoulder went bad) to show how good he may have been.

You just can't compare Brohm in HS to Couch. The teams eached played on were totally different. If you want to base it on that then there is no comparison.

Most of the time I would agree...but it is clearly obvious that Brohm is more savvy, with that, all other things being equal Brian gets the edge.

That is not the point. I was simply arguing that Couch has went toe to toe with good players in his career and performed quite well. I don't think going up against Michael Bush and Male would have intimidated Couch. I think he would have rose to the occasion much like he did when he played against Peyton Manning in college.

Corbin's Calvin Bird would rank in the Top Ten.

 

Calvin's brother Rodger played for the Oakland Raiders, nephew Steve played for the Cardinals and Giants in the NFL, and brother Jerry(Steve's dad) had a terrific career under Rupp @ UK and played in the pros as well.

 

Calvin was the best all-around football player of the Bird boys and was one of the best at the high school level, period.

Without a doubt the best high school player I have ever watched play in person is Michael Bush.

I would venture to say that Brian scored better on his ACT...ATHLETE? Maybe Brian did get drafted by a major league ball club.

Bush is the best I ever saw play live, with a close second being Harrodsburg's Craig Yeast. I appreciate the nod to local hero Herbie Phelps, who is a legend. However, he was before my time, so I can't say I saw him play.

With no disrespect to Tim Couch (or anyone else mentioned), Brian Brohm is my choice. His Jr. year stats are unreal.......all he did was win 3 rings playing the best competition (in and out of state) in the best class in KY. He did have the benefit of playing at Trinity, but that came with lots of pressure as well.

 

A lot of Tim's stats came against mountain teams that rarely had to defend a passing team other than Leslie County or Breathitt County...

Calvin Bird from Corbin would have to be in the running. He won some national player of the year honors during his senior year of high school and was named a captain of the all-american team.

 

I agree they left the number one choice out.

Tim Couch, revolutionized the way high school football in Kentucky was played.

 

Even more importantly, there has never been as much national media attention for the state as when he played.
