I know that many will say mine was a homer vote, but I voted for Brian Brohm. I understand the arguments for Tim Couch, but I feel that even though Brian's supporting cast may have been stronger, I feel his level of competition was higher, and he was still able to hit the record books in several areas.

 

I also feel that if you put Tim Couch in a situation like the classic Trinity/Male battle for the State Championship, I'm not as comfortable that Couch would have competed as well with Michael Bush.

 

For the record, my decision came down to two players, Brohm and Bush. And, Brohm BARELY edged out Bush, and the edge came from the out-of-state teams Trinity played while Brohm was QB'ing for Trinity.

Calvin Bird from Corbin would have to be in the running. He won some national player of the year honors during his senior year of high school and was named a captain of the all-american team.

I went with Michael Bush. Played both ways and was clearly the best player on the field in every game he played. Played multiple positions in high school. He lined up at RB, WR, QB. Very tough defensively. That's why I chose Bush. He was good on both sides of the ball.

 

I never saw Horning play due to my sub 30 year old age. I've seen clips, but those are always "highlights". I am sure he was nasty!

I gave the homer vote to Mark Higgs. Maybe not the best on the list, but he was darn good.

Michael Bush. You have to count a guy's contributions on both sides of the ball, and his put him over the top on this list.

 

As for Couch ... yes, he put up big-time numbers with what wasn't always a stellar supporting cast. The competition level wasn't what some others on this list have faced, either.

I would just have liked to see Tim Couch play at Trinity. Then he would be the greatest high school football player ever. Tim Couch had 36 players on his senior year team. His go to guy, Ricky Hensley, ran about a 4.8 forty and had 80 catches. Its about making the people around you better and its about making them believe they can be successful. He did all of these things.

I can't help but think that if Brian Brohm didn't go to Trinity, they would just plug another guy in there and he would have done the same thing. I mean, they win a State Championship with a 5'7, 5'8 quarterback? Thats the TEAM that makes the man there at Trinity, which is what its all about anyway.

Nope. They wouldn't have beaten Male without Brohm.

Brian's performances against the better teams he played. He took Elder (the eventual Ohio State Champion that year) apart like a surgeon. He was masterful in the best KY game ever against Male. While his numbers weren't stellar against them, he did give X fits. He took a physical pounding against MBA his senior year but kept coming back. He even ran down a DB after a pick and made a TD saving tackle at the 2 yard line. While Trinity didn't win that game, Brian certainly was the main reason they were in contention throughout the game.

 

The way he handled adversity. I'm sure that Brian in no way expected to start his senior year 0-4, but he did. Brian was never down on his team mates, in fact he even offered to play D if the coaches thought it would help.

 

With all due respect to Tim Couch his numbers were against lesser competition. I would be curious to know if he played any games against higher caliber competition (Highlands, Boyle County, etc.) and what kind of numbers he put up against them.

Funny you should ask. In the first game of the 95 season against HHS in the Thoroughbred Bowl Couch ran for 200+ AND threw for 200+. Now, that was an HHS team that eventually beat the tar out of Leslie later in the state semi's, but he manhandled us the first game. It was impressive. I think the final was like 56-54...

 

His play at safety may put him over the top for me...

I agree...and it seemed that Michael never left the field. He was a force that both Offensive & Defensive Coordinators had to worry about containing on every play.

I can't decide between Brian Brohm and Tim Couch. I mean, Brohm was surrounded by superior talent and put up big numbers in the largest class. However, Couch put up HUGE numbers with inferior talent. Not sure which is worth more.
