Atwell was an outstanding all-around athlete. He played quarterback and safety and had good (not great) speed and a tremendous vertical leap.

 

Of course, he put up those numbers on the Class A level, which tends to be discounted a bit. But he was a deserving Mr. Football that year.

 

I agree Atwell was deserving. He was great in the Ky-Tenn. Allstar game that year. And a good friend of mine played on that team and said he did a great job.

I am a baby boomer like most on here I'm sure, I'm 50, so didn't see either of these two play, but after consulting with several senior citizens of the game, I have to think that Herby Phelps and Paul Hornung were by far the only two that could deserve the award.

uncanny accuracy and savvy.

Don Gullett, Don Gullett, Don Gullett, the man scored 72 points in a football game. I don't have to say anything else. 72 in one game, and he didnt even go pro in that sport. This was the most atheletic guy to ever come out of Ky. He could have been a star in any sport he wanted.

Tim Couch without a doubt was the best I've ever actually seen. Keep it all in perspective like it has been said before. How many other kids single handed other players have had such an impact on a team and a state during their time? He was already a legend before college. Now granted NFL didn't work out so well, and that could be an entirely different thread, but if we're looking at high school players, while in high school...I go Couch all the way.

 

I'd have to give some props to Derek Homer also. Played against him, he was one tough guy, but not in the class of greatest ever. Maybe one of the top 10 Running backs though.

Winning state titles means you have the best team (on that night! LOL Luv ya Mike!).

Mr Football was Doug Beaumont in 2006 and Robinson from Lone Oak in 2007. There are 10 ( 4 + 6) teams of players that won titles but none were better than those two the last two years. If winning titles and throwing TD's are the criteria, then why isn't Will Stein or Nick Petrino mentioned?

No comparison. Brian elevated U of L more because he took them to a spot they had never been before. THS won before Brian, they won after.

This poll would have more validity if you couldn't vote for a player on the team(s) you support. A lot of provincialism is present.

Here's the thing, outside of Brohm, who put up the numbers against the competition that Alexander played? Sean ran for 4 TD's at the PIT against Elder. I believe that they also beat La Salle, CovCath, Bryan Station, and the best Campbell Co. team in the last 25 years...twice. 54 TDs and 3,000 yards his senior year is incredible. Scholastic Sports America had him as one of the Pre-Season All-Americans on ESPN. He finished on the USA Today's 1st team.

Tim Couch was, by far, the best player to put on the pads in the state of Kentucky.

 

ESPN had him as the 6th best high school ATHLETE OF ALL TIME!!!
