Should the Reds trade Dunn for Lidge?

Featured Replies

So how do you fix middle relief so it matters with Lidge by "slotting" the pen? It's slotted from the end now and they suck...

It's pretty clear from watching around the league that certain guys do better in situation A as opposed to situation B. I believe Linebrink was quoted as just such an example earlier in this thread.

Say you trade for Lidge and put him in as closer. Bray and Majewski and McBeth develop like we think they will. That right there cleans up a lot of problems, and you can put guys like Coutlangis and Coffey in less pressure-filled situations, where they probably thrive.

I'm sold. Give Lidge 20 million... :D

Well, let's not get too crazy.

Still, the highest-paid closers are in the $7 mil to $10 mil range, with a lot of young guys (e.g. Papelbon, Street) due for big raises in the next year or two. I'm figuring that in the right situation, team-wise, Lidge can recapture what he did the last few years, so I have no problem with that range when you consider you're saving salary on Dunn and Griffey (since it's widely accepted he'll be gone in the next year).

And then consider Houston knows this and Lidge isn't going anywhere...

By the same token, however, it makes little sense to eat his salary the rest of the year if they aren't going to use him when it seems their team is destined to be fighting the Reds for last in the division.

One thing that hasn't been addressed in this thread: What use does Houston have for an Adam Dunn?

I just can't see this as a good trade for the Reds unless they've just resigned themselves to the fact that Dunn isn't in their future. Lidge still has control issues and I wouldn't count on him ever regaining his elite closer status. I don't like Dunn that much but I would think he'd have to be worth more than this to a contender.

How many times have we seen closers just lose it for some unknown reason? Dan Kolb, Danny Graves, Chris reitsma I just don't think you trade someone like Dunn to someone in your own league much less your own division

He comes here for one half season as a rental and then his price skyrockets when he hits the market. Were you not around this off season...

First you doubted his abililty to be a closer, but now he's going to be really good for a half a year and get $12M a year. Which is it?

I doubt his ability as a closer. I doubt Ted Lilly's ability as a starter. That doesn't mean a GM is going to make a good financial decision...

I haven't read all of this but IMO you tidy up the bullpen, long and short, before you lose a player like Dunn for a closer. Sounds silly to me to trade 40 and 100 for someone that only gets to play once a week, irregardless (for you cshs;) ) of how good he is...

Ok. What kind of salary do you think Dunn will get when he hits the open market?

12-15 million per season over 5-7 years. I don't mind moving Dunn. I just don't think Lidge is the guy you want in return...

Agree. And there is the rub, who is sensible in return for Dunn? We've had the lists made on here before with regards to "who would you trade Dunn for?", and never has one of those guys been discussed as a trade possibility. I agree that a Lidge for Dunn straight up deal is a bad one.

3.5 walks per nine innings is "control problems?"

Would you take Papelbon and 4.2 per nine?
