Kentucky Pays $50,000 To Get Out Of UMass Game

Featured Replies

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart pays the 50K buyout to get out of next years UMass game to be played in Boston. Not really sure what to make of this. I guess just Gillispie fooling around with the schedule.

Seems pretty bush to me to back out, especially after so many tix had been sold.

Pretty crappy to pull that after the date was already shifted and then tickets sold. I guess North Dakota State Community College called and wanted a game with the Cats.

Good to see Andy Katz with the reporting....

I have mixed feelings about the move but the contract did have a buyout clause, so like UMass's AD said, next time they will have to adjust the amount of money in any future buyouts. UMass is going to lose a boatload of money in the deal and UK will likely gain some cash and still get the W.

I think this is a non-issue...

I agree !

I've seen it happen all the time in sports, that's why it's in the contract.

They canceled it because they didn't want five games away from Rupp? Or is there another reason?

Not like Boston is a hotbed for recruiting, most new coaches make changes to the schedule to suit their individual preferences. As already stated, this is a non-issue that it seems someone is trying to make into an issue.

Non-issue.

Maybe Mitch doesn't want to get beat by a guy that he passed up for the job.....

It would have bee a good draw for the U-Mass program to get UK into their arena! They would have made some money here, thats for sure! But like it was stated before, BCG is probably wanting to tinker with the schedule a little to help him out with his recruiting. This is is something that is really not a big deal in sports!

I just don't like UK doing this to Travis and UMass. It makes it worse that it isn't just a random coach or program, it's a guy with lots of ties to the Kentucky.....

Didn't Barnhart do the same thing to Temple in football?

No. That change was initiated by the MAC to help accommodate their conference schedule. Kentucky will now play Kent State at home instead of Temple on the road.
