I remember back then we used to get 6 channels if that. I liked Channel 19 back then before they went to FOX. I'd had to argue with my mother and 4 sisters because their soap opera's was on when I wanted to watch something else. Then I got myself a TV and took it upstairs to my room and solved that problem.

Now I have DirecTv. Still have to share with my tv time with them ol' soap operas with my lady. Now she has found the Soap Opera Network. I done now.

But I watch tv more so at night after work so that works out alright.

How about this. One of us kids in front of the T.V. Mom's at the bedroom window. Dad's up on the hill with the antenna. Kid yells worse. Mom yells worse. Dad twists the antenna pole.

6 channels? WOW. We got maybe 3 or 4. We had the 3 major networks, NBC, ABC and CBS but didn't always get CBS. We could sometimes get a PBS channel.

Rocky and Bullwinkle, Mighty Mouse, Underdog, and The Cisco Kid on Saturday Mornings.

and......Bugs Bunny, the Jetsons, the Herculoids, and Johnny Quest.

I remember cold, cold milk being delivered to the front door and also the most wonderful Potato Chips (Charles Chips) delivered to the house as well.

I remember New year's eve the best. Mom and Dad would go out and I was allowed to have a friend spend the night and we would order delivery pizza from Gino's and stay up and watch horror movies ( frankenstein, wolfman and dracula ) until the station would go off the air.

I remember watching Superbowl X with my dad. I watched most of the second half with one hand on the rabbit ears, looking around the TV.

The best was when Marlon Perkins would pitch the insurance while his assistant, Jim, would be wrestling a wild animal in the picture behind him:

 

"While Jim subdues the Anaconda, let's hear from Mutual of Omaha and the wonderful insurance plans that they have to give you and your family peace of mind."

 

Meanwhile, Jim is up to his waist in the edge of the river with a huge snake coiling around him. After the commercial, Marlon would explain how "we" caught the snake. Even as a kid, I figured out that it was better to be Marlon than Jim.

I kinda got the idea that even Mutual of Omaha wouldn't insure Jim!!

Driving from NoKy to G-town tonight, there was a dead spot where the music station I was listening to faded out, and I wasn't ready to start listening to the Reds pregame, so I put it on WVXU.

 

The program was "The Way Radio Was," and they were playing an old radio episode of Superman, circa 1945. Now maybe I'm just a man out of time, but I'm completely captivated by the sound and excitement of the program, and the visual picture it painted. I'm also a bit of an historian, and I'm also picturing the actors in front of the big microphone in the studio, using old-timey sound effect devices and delivering their dialogue in some demonstrative fashion befitting the time and the medium.

 

Part of why I still dig "A Prarie Home Companion" so much, I guess.

Well I'm just 21 but I always hear my grandparents and other people saying about how they had to walk so many miles in the snow just to get to school. lol

 

 

As stories get told...... One of the great stories from my grandmother is how far they had to walk to and from school each day..... some 4 miles round trip. She always talked about walking in the elements as well, rain and snow.... My generation has continued to tell this same story of my grandmother's days... Just that it was "UP HILL BOTH WAYS".....

Chiller Theater ?

For those of you who grew up in the Lexington viewing area, do you remember the after school show on WTVQ (channel 62 and now 36)? It starred a clown named "Happy" and a puppet named "Froggy". They showed cartoons, the Three Stooges and (I think) old Flash Gordon serials.

 

The show's director was a guy named Rick and whenever they went from the live portion to one of the cartoons or shorts they would say, "Roll em Ranger Rick".

 

I also remember during the Christmas season when the Lexington stations would have a Santa Claus show with a live Santa reading letters to Santa and they would show cartoons.
