Best Team To Not Win a Title?

Featured Replies

Not my school, but 1993 Danville always seems get a mention when this topic comes up. The Ads were champs in '91 & '92, rolling with a 42 game win streak before being stunned by Prestonsburg in the '93 AA semis.

They bounced back to win it again in '94. Danville was historically great during that era, but P'burg cost them a good look at a state record win streak. They may have approached 60 in a row if not for the stumble against the Blackcats.

I was going to comment this. I grew up on the sidelines as a water boy with Coach Ridders son Ben. Coach Smith was our PE teacher in elementary school. Jason Skirvin was the first childhood hero I had

That team was supremely talented and the game Tilghman lost to Boyle is still talked about often. That game gave me a healthy respect for Boyle that still exists. That PT team was also extremely well

18' Losing to Corbin in the semis with another excellent team also lead by Reese and a stellar junior class

19' Losing in the finals to JC lead by a Mr. Football candidate Reese Smith and that same stellar class as seniors.

If someone had told you after the 2017 championship that the Smith/Lanter/Bartelson class would only get one ring, a lot of people in Boyle County would have laughed that person out of town.

I had them penciled in for a three-peat, but Corbin and JC drastically altered the legacy of that group.

I'd also say Danville's 1997 team that lost on a last second pass to Lexington Catholic would be on this list.  Sam Harp always saw that as the title that got away (aside from the 2006 8 minute meltdown vs. NCC).

Not on par with some of these elite teams, but Glasgow faithful deeply consider the time 80s to be their "Powerhouse Era." From 1982-1986 They were on a tear. Beating all the regional teams including Owensboro, Hopkinsville, Bowling Green, and Franklin Simpson; Teams of the era. They Lost to Corbin in the state finals in 1982, Then went Undefeated in 1984, 1885, and 1986 before eventually falling to those incredible Jaggers Ft Knox teams.

Others may also mention the runs in 1999 and 2000, falling to the Boyle County Dynasty.

2011 was a personal favorite of mine as we saw an 0-11 team in 2009 turn into a state runner up team before our eyes.

still no real state champions at Glasgow... besides "mythical" state championships in 1929 with a bowl game victory over the Northern Ky champion Highlands and 1942 in a similar case.

Sad part about it Glasgow has clearly been the second best team on several occasions. Not only the 4 championship games that they lost but in 2001 they played a Bardstown team with John Wesley Monin that no one played close all year but with one play left in the third quarter it was 0-0 Glasgow threw a pick six and lost 21-0 as it kind of took the life out of them and they just gave up ran out of gas however you want to put it in the 4th quarter. Another was 2013 when Desales first emerged they blew out everyone except Glasgow in the region championship Glasgow led the Colts 28-21 in the fourth quarter Desales came back and won 35-28 then blew out the semi and championship teams to win state. Seems like Glasgow has just never had the great teams except when there was a dominant team like Corbin, Boyle, Bardstown and Desales out there.

What's wild is if Boyle pulls 18 and 19 off.. add in 24.. what a run. A lot of teams would love to have 6 in 9 years, but imagine if they had pulled off 9 in 9 years.

Does Chuck leave after 19 if they win it 18 and 19? Stepping down after three straight would be tough.

2005 and 2007 teams unfortunately are right behind the 2008 team. Some really good teams and players were coming through St. X during this time, but they just came up a little short of the ultimate goal.

2007 X team that lost in OT to Trinity was the first to come to mind. The Will Stein and Tim Philips Trinity team was good but that X team is as good as I've seen in Jefferson County to not win it.

The Male team led by Michael Bush that lost to Brian Brohm and Trinity is THE answer. 2003 I believe?

2002

For Boyle I'll go....

1.  2024  Just heartbreaking loss to Cov Cath in the 3rd. round!

2. 2019  Lost in the Championship to Johnson Central

3. 1997 & 1996 - 97 team beat the 2A State Champion Bourbon County 33-0 earlier in the season and lost to them on a muddy field in the playoffs.  That game helped push for a turf field!  IMO This team started the Boyle dynasty along with the 96 team that lost to Breathitt County in the semi's.

4. 2018 Semi final loss at Corbin

I had the pleasure of officiating the 92 and 94 State Championship games. Those were very good teams.

There are a few at Somerset.  But 1982 tops my list.  I'm not sure that they are as good as the 1984 team that was undefeated before losing to Newport Central Catholic in the semifinals.  But 1982 should definitely have won the 2A Title that season.  That was back in the days when only 1 team from each District (or was it Sub-Districts)made the playoffs. Somerset lost on the road at Boyle County 28-27 and didn't win the tie breaker so they didn't make the playoffs.  They did, however, go on the road to Corbin the next week and beat the Redhounds 20-6.  Corbin went on to win the 2A Title over Glasgow 18-6.

For Lincoln County I would go with the ‘88 or ‘93 teams.

The ‘88 team won 13 straight and finished with a 13-1 record, including a first ever 20-0 win against Danville. They lost in the semi-finals to Tilghman 7-27. The Patriots also shutout 6 opponents, only allowing 89 points all season.

The ‘93 team finished as state runners-up falling to Covington Catholic. The Patriots scored 528 points that season, and allowed 126. Jeremy Simpson won the Mr. Football award after rushing for 3,044 yards and scoring 284 points.

'96 Dayton Greendevils. Lost in the region to Beechwood on 4th and goal. They win that game, they win their 2nd 1A state title in football.

I couldn’t agree more. That game was for the state championship for 1A that season. That was one of the most electric environments I have seen for a high school football game, playoffs or not.

1992 CovCath

Loaded on both sides of the ball. Superstar QB. Skill position player depth the likes NKY hadn’t seen before. Massive talented offensive line. Fast swarming defense.

That dark rainy Saturday at Wooten Field that saw the Colonels stunned in round three of the playoffs still looms large in the memories of those that donned the CovCath blue, red and white that day.
