Christian County defeated Station in the semifinals that year. It wasn't close.... 27-0 in favor of the Colonels.

It still amazes me how bad Christian Co fell off.

That team was supremely talented and the game Tilghman lost to Boyle is still talked about often. That game gave me a healthy respect for Boyle that still exists. That PT team was also extremely well

I really think the merger will have them competitive again in the near future.. Won’t be as quick as basketball but the euthanasiam has the Tigers excited.

The 2004 Owensboro Catholic Aces falling to Belfry 28-21 in the AA State Finals is still one of the most memorable games I’ve watched at Papa John’s Stadium. If I remember correctly, Belfry went up 28-7 after returning the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown. From there, the Aces battled all the way back and nearly pulled off an incredible comeback before coming up just short.

Belfry barely threw the ball that night — maybe fewer than five passes the entire game. Are we surprised by that stat line at all? Meanwhile, the Aces relied on the arm of Zach Bernard, who was absolutely electric at quarterback. As a senior, Bernard threw for 4,654 passing yards and 52 touchdowns. In my opinion, he’s one of the best quarterbacks to ever come out of the Owensboro area, if not the best.

For Raceland:

1.  The team that should have won, no doubt, 2012.  Just a special team that was the first Raceland team to win a Regional Championship and make it to the semi-finals.  "We" said when they were in 3rd grade that they would probably win a State Championship and they were really close.

2.  The team with the best all-around talent that did not win was 2008.  They had beaten LCA in the regular season and were facing them in the playoffs.  The Rams were winning and you could see the defeat in LCA.  Then, the foot was taken off the pedal and LCA mounted a comeback and won.  LCA lost the next week to eventual State Champion, Hazard.  But, I firmly believe, as did LCA's coach that season, that Raceland would have matched-up against Hazard a lot better than LCA did.

3.  2006 was a special team that many thought could win it all.  Just an abundance of talent.  But, the most talented team doesn't always win.

Eastern KY Football was down in 2012 as a whole. The top three teams that season were in the west with Mayfield, Beechwood, and KCD. The state championship score reflects that.

The question and answer is not reflective of the talent of other teams. But, agenda away.

I thought Hazard was the state runner-ups in 2008, and Beechwood won the state title that year.

This is true. Beechwood beat Hazard in the finals, 14-7. Those two, plus Raceland and LCA, appeared to be pretty evenly matched that year. It was a "what if" season for the three that didn't win it.

Raceland's recent history - the last twenty years, or so - has been a tale of missed opportunities.

All great teams that year. I actually played Beechwood in the second round that year as a senior. It was a long night!

The Biggest one for the Devils was the 2014 State Runner Team. We had a 28 point lead and to be honest not sure how we lost this game. Probably the longest trip back to Owensboro from Bowling Green. I was going 90 mph too. That trip seemed like it took all day.

There are a few at Somerset.  But 1982 tops my list.  I'm not sure that they are as good as the 1984 team that was undefeated before losing to Newport Central Catholic in the semifinals.  But 1982 should definitely have won the 2A Title that season.  That was back in the days when only 1 team from each District (or was it Sub-Districts)made the playoffs. Somerset lost on the road at Boyle County 28-27 and didn't win the tie breaker so they didn't make the playoffs.  They did, however, go on the road to Corbin the next week and beat the Redhounds 20-6.  Corbin went on to win the 2A Title over Glasgow 18-6.

Always held that as one of the best that never won a title. Boyle’s one point upset was one of the best games I ever called. I think they were better than the 84 team.

I played against that 1982 Rebel team. They were really good. I still see Mike Harmon around some. Excellent running back and great guy!

My doctor was a senior guard on Somerset. When he was in college he made friends with some guys that played on that Boyle County team.  He said that when they were practicing goal line defense that the coach told them that if we ran that option play to all play the quarterback, because if Stephens got the pitch that there was no way that they could stop him. Sure enough, the quarterback kept it.  I thought it looked like he might have gotten in, but I was 12.

Stephen’s was unstoppable that night.

A little video of that Jumper squad in action against eventual 2A champion Corbin. Somerset allowed just 51 points in its ten wins that year, but Boyle found a way to put 28 on them.
