Best Team To Not Win a Title?

1992 CovCath

Loaded on both sides of the ball. Superstar QB. Skill position player depth the likes NKY hadn’t seen before. Massive talented offensive line. Fast swarming defense.

That dark rainy Saturday at Wooten Field that saw the Colonels stunned in round three of the playoffs still looms large in the memories of those that donned the CovCath blue, red and white that day.

Interesting pick. From my point of view that Highlands team was a complete wrecking ball filled with size, talent and speed as well. Thinking more D1 guys possibly. Schlarman, Reynolds, Berringer (Jr), Scarlato ...playing them both that year, I was surprised Cov Cath won the first game and a tad bit more surprised it wasn't a wider margin in the playoffs (and not to take anything away from the Colonels at all).

There were about 25 kids on that team and they were all tougher than a two dollar steak.

I was going to comment this. I grew up on the sidelines as a water boy with Coach Ridders son Ben. Coach Smith was our PE teacher in elementary school. Jason Skirvin was the first childhood hero I had

That PT team was also extremely well coached. Two best teams in the class that year by a significant margin. Hunter Cantwell and Joe Casey were in USA Today as the Nation's Best Backfield (Qb/Rb). During that game, the only way I knew how to describe Boyle was they looked like a team of synchronized swimmers, literally everything with perfect timing and precision.

Did you forget the final score of the regular season game AT Highlands? That was a beatdown. If that game was played on a dry field, Colonels with that game 100% of the time.

* CovCath was 12-0 heading into that season with having only allowed 33 points in its last five games.

* The Colonels beat Moeller 22-17 at Galbraith Field - marking the first time an NKY team had beaten Moeller.

* Behind QB Adam McCormack, RB Jude Hoffman, a stacked WR crew (Chad Cogswell, Mike Hild, Doug Verst, Joe Geraci, etc) and a superb K Rob Farrell, CovCath averaged 41+ points per game and only allowed 9 per game.

* The first matchup with Highlands - despite the wealth of talent and future college players - wasn't a mollywhipping. Simply put, Highlands couldn't stop our offense.

* I'm surprised you were surprised CovCath won the regular season matchup -- the whipping must have really shocked you! In CovCath's first five games. they beat up on a very physical Boone County team (42-14), whipped an Adam Brown led Newport squad (36-6), gained revenge on a VERY good Beechwood team (53-9), shocked the world with the Moeller win, and whipped Simon Kenton (55-0). What about that five game run gave you the impression that game was going to be an easy win for the Birds?

All that said, that offensive line for Highlands led by Schlarman and Reynolds played their tails off that day after a not so great first game performance.

Yeah ... playing against one of the teams felt like a normal beating playing against the other team is still with me physically to this day. And to answer your question ...who cares what happened Conner, SK, Scott, Dixie? Not sure I would be bragging about all those whippings.

Should we discount Cov Cath's mud Bowl victory due to it being muddy? I don't think so. Teams and coaching staffs have to be able to adapt to the conditions and overcome the obstacles that are presented.

I get your point with Moeller ... I probably would have left out Newport (and yes .. I know how good Adam Brown was ...but shouldn't be in mentioned with the others). Simon Kenton? Seriously? I would get your point if it was SK 93 ... but they in 92? Sorry, they shouldn't be involved in the discussion. Boone County .. not sure I would lump them in with a Moeller win .. They obviously finished well ...at the same time they were life and death with Conner ...needing a late score to win. We could probably throw out comparisons, common opponents all day ..doesn't change the fact that the trophy resides in Fort Thomas to this day.

The Beechwood game is an interesting comparison ...but in order to prove the point that the regular season vs the playoffs means not so much ... I give you Beechwood 99. Bellevue handled them easily in the regular season (23 to 0 maybe?) Beechwood won easily 35 to 0. Not a perfect comparison ...but same point ... when it comes time to survive and advance ... give me the team that survived and advanced.

I think your points are 100% valid in relation to "Best team to never win a title" ... we probably aren't going to ever agree with the "who was the better team" discussion ...which is fine. Good to see Jude Hoffman's name come up. Great dude to this day.

The game is still on YouTube. A favorite of mine to go back and watch from time to time.

Was this the Skirvin/Campoamor/one other really good back team that was REALLY fun to watch during that time frame? I remember covering one of those games AT Dayton that was an AWESOME game. I interviewed Dan Ridder aftewards and he was - as usual - tremendous. Don't recall many more details, but I do remember how good that Dayton run was.

Yes, Jason Skirvin was running back for them at that time. It was one of the most balanced and athletic teams that Dayton ever had. I believe that Skirvin is still the best running back Dayton had at the high school level.

Yes sir, last watched it on there a couple years ago.

That '23 Douglass team was a good as a collection of talent there has been in the state.  They had guys everywhere. I think it is fair to add them to the list of teams who did not meet expectations.

Bryan Station 1982. Powerhouse of a team. 3 players ended up in the NFL one a Hall of Fame. Mark Logan, Cornell Burbage and D Dawson.

Who beat Station in 82 and did that team win it all?

Don’t know who beat Bryan Station, but Christian County won 4A that year.  Their only blemish was to the 15-0 3A champ Bluebirds.

Christian County defeated Station in the semifinals that year. It wasn't close.... 27-0 in favor of the Colonels.

There are a few at Somerset.  But 1982 tops my list.  I'm not sure that they are as good as the 1984 team that was undefeated before losing to Newport Central Catholic in the semifinals.  But 1982 should definitely have won the 2A Title that season.  That was back in the days when only 1 team from each District (or was it Sub-Districts)made the playoffs. Somerset lost on the road at Boyle County 28-27 and didn't win the tie breaker so they didn't make the playoffs.  They did, however, go on the road to Corbin the next week and beat the Redhounds 20-6.  Corbin went on to win the 2A Title over Glasgow 18-6.

In my opinion, that 1982 team is probably the best ever at Somerset. The 83 and 84 teams are neck and neck for me.
