More trouble at Cooper - This time with Girls' Basketball

Featured Replies

Lots of chitter chatter about Cooper and this comment from Facebook summed it up:

"The Lady Jags endeavored more this season (behind the scenes) than ANY athlete or child, in general, should EVER have to encounter in a sport."

With the announcement of Coach Borchers leaving I chit chatted with a few people around NKY and on this topic I was told the issue is "Toxic Parents" at Cooper.

I want to make sure I understand what you are saying. You are saying that you believe parents should have an input and a say on who a school hires as a coach, is that correct?

I saw that as well. Does not seem like all is well out on Longbranch. And if that is the case, when is there a reckoning with the year after year turmoil in athletics at Cooper? Over just the past two years alone there as been some kind of uproar around boys and girls basketball, volleyball, and football.

You have the best girls and boys coach in the area 12 months ago and then you mess it up.

I am so intrigued by this. I always love a good story with some drama. I am hoping someone will spill the tea!

Sounds like one of those things that somebody says when they’re upset that their daughter isn’t starting..

But......their daughter is a starter. The plot thickens! ?

I'm wondering if this person meant "endured"?

On no! The suspense! This is a stunner...

But seriously folks....at a certain point, you have to wonder when Boone County will make changes to address the CLEARLY negative culture at RCHS.

It's across multiple sports and infects both sexes.  It's crazy.

That is what happened last year, correct, the issue with Coach Sullivan (so we are told) was the culture and the changes were made to improve the culture at Cooper, correct?

It's really interesting to me that everything seemed to be okay when they beat Sacred Heart and played really good games against Assumption and GRC. I think it's very difficult to gauge the "culture" of a school and a total athletic program rather than looking at individual programs. I think most of the programs were hit hard by graduation and transfers. The two gentlemen that coached men's and women's basketball last year are both fine coaches, but both had seasons they are not accustomed to having. As much shade as people throw at Cooper I would think that there are many schools that would be happy with the school's athletic success.

Is there any truth that Cooper players left the locker room before the coaches arrived after the game?

Some did, yes, bolting out immediately after the game.

This entire situation defies logic, I have watched a lot of games this year and I felt like the top four teams were George Rogers Clark, Assumption, Simon Kenton, and Sacred Heart in no particular order.  However there were other teams including Frederick Douglass and Cooper that were capable of beating anyone on a given night.  While I have the utmost respect for the Highlands and Ryle teams and their fine coaching staffs Cooper's last two games made no sense.  There was too much talent on the squad for that to happen.  Basketball has changed so much, I used to do pre -season previews but I will not attempt that anymore because I never know what the rosters will look like until game time and even then will the player actually finish the season with that team.  I just wish all these girls the best this summer and hope to see them back on the court next year. My only advice to all young players, try to stop and smell the roses, this should be your care free years.

This says more about the players than the coaches.
