I haven't coached at the high school level since 2019. I got wistful the other day about maybe eventually going back. Then I remembered parents existed.

At this point, who would coach at Cooper?  Between the administration and parents taking to social media, it isn’t worth the money. On the flip side, I have heard stories of coaches there that lead me to side with a couple of the parents. I just don’t see the benefit of going to social media to air grievances.

I will answer that question with one of the "slams" this online fervor is pointing out against the current Cooper girls basketball coach - ones without high school coaching experience. I could not imagine a coach leaving a program voluntarily to go to a program at Cooper right now.

The only thing I'll add on this situation (Cooper Girls' Basketball) is there has been uneasiness / unhappiness / whatever term you want to use from jump.  The girls had issues with the Head Coach and her husband from day one, but where the blame falls is not for me (as an outsider who talks to a Dad of a player often) to diagnose.  I know that replacing a legendary coach who has been the most successful GBB coach since Nell Fookes (and is a TREMENDOUS human and culture builder) isn't easy.  Do I think the coaches could have handled things differently at some points, probably.  Maybe it is the Husband / Wife coaches' fault.  Maybe it is the players' fault and not being adaptable and clinging to how things used to be.  Maybe it is the parents' fault for not being supportive of the new coaches and their concepts, communication styles, differences enough at home.  I am not equipped to answer.  I just know things haven't been good from the beginning.

I say all of that to say this:  something happened after the Assumption game, likely internally, because the team that beat SHA and lost on a walk-off to the best team in KY (my opinion, GRC is right there too), is not the one that played Ryle in the Districts or the Birds at NKU.  We may never know.

Hopefully someone is working to bring everyone together so that they can hit reset, learn from this, and be ready to be one cohesive unit next year -- they should be TERRIFIC again in 2026-27.  

What I am curious to get to the bottom of is this:  apparently when Mr. and Mrs. returned to the locker room and discovered the Upper Classmen had bolted, the younger ones caught the brunt of his frustration.  Apparently one of the younger ones, who shall not be named, had a father who was VERY upset about how it was handled and has communicated that to the school and / or the Male assistant coach.

The Lady Jags played Highlands in the first round of the 9th Region Girls Basketball Tournment on Sunday, March 1 at NKU's Truist Arena. 

The Lady Jags were 33rd Girls District Runner-Up with Hayley Noel and Brinkli Rankin named to the All-Tournament Team.  They earned a spot in the 9th Region Tournament that started on Sunday, March 1 and came up short to HIghlands.

Congrats to Cole Stanton on being named to the 33rd District All-Tournament Team for the 33rd District Boys Basksetball Tournament.

Cooper boys' program will be just fine and back to year after year success very soon. Coach Holthaus is a great coach. He is one of the best. The girl's program is a total mess. They should have a been a plug and play district champ with the bar set at a state championship level. As one poster noted, there were times when they seemed fine after big wins. I know there were most if not all players and parents biting their tongues all season for the sake of the team's success. While I do not condone some of the players skipping the post-game talk, it doesn't surprise me at all, and I understand why they did it. X's and O's and wins and losses are not the issue there. There is an extremely large mental mess remaining in their program and unfortunately it may get uglier as more comes out.

I understand what you are saying, and am definitely not taking the parents/players side, but the complaints that are coming out is that the head coaches husband (who I believe is an assistant) was a little too "old school" and at times was over the top. Now, do I think part of it is players and parents that were not willing to adjust to the new coach and kept comparing things to how it used to be, probably. But, there is no place for some of the things that I have heard that was said to those girls.

If I may ask, and I realize that you are quoting other people, what do you think it means to be "old school?"

What I am gathering is saying things to young adults that, back in the day, was considered "tough coaching" but may have been demeaning or putting down one of the players.

To me, in what I have heard, being a little more towards verbally abusive and putting the girls down. I realize "old school" is vague, but things that coaches did and said 20-30 years ago which in this day is not acceptable or considered "bullying or abusive".

I also want to add in that I am hearing this from others so I can't comment if it is true or not, or verified.

 

I attended a few games this season and saw how well they played in different points throughout the year. I would have never expected these last two games. I (like many people) have seen the FB posts and obviously people are frustrated but what exactly happened? Is this just a case of different coaching styles from the previous coach and it not working, or is there something deeper? I am sure more details will come out but just really surprised at this outcome.

I don't think the outcome was surprising to anyone close to the program other than maybe the coaching staff. The writing has been on the wall for some time. The wheels were held on with duct tape and they just fell off. Disappointing is the adjective most would use because this Cooper team on paper should have been cutting down the nets at NKU. From what I am hearing, this goes way beyond a little old school coaching.
