The line judge that blew the inadvertent whistle probably didn’t sleep much last evening, easy to do and feel really bad for him, doesn’t change the scenario of the hugeness of that play.

  • Actually, Boyle is 5-4 vs Corbin all-time with the first meeting in the 1977 playoffs (a Corbin win).  Boyle has won 5 of the last 6 meetings.  They are heavy teams have met in the state championship

  • Needs an official in the background with a whistle!

  • I’m a Boyle fan and I will say that is a hell of a way to lose.  If it were the other way around I would have been furious.  I was on the sideline and heard the inadvertent whistle although the ball s

As an official, the finger whistle is always what should be used rather than the lanyard whistle, keeps the whistle out of your mouth as long as possible before blowing the play dead, not sure what the line judge was using. Officiating 101.

This was ruled Boyle ball.

I am trying to figure out who blew the whistle? Probably the white hat? He never stopped his arm moving for the clock to keep running. If he thought it was a fumble recovery, he would have stopped the clock.

I was thinking maybe the ref closest to the camera may have blown his whistle as he was blocked from seeing the ball by the QB when he fell on the ball, and perhaps for a split second he thought the QB had control and was down. But that would have been a very fast whistle. The ref nearest to the camera was moving to spot the ball where it was recovered by Corbin, but he didn't motion his arms to stop the clock either.

Between this play and the onside kick play in Beechwood Owensboro Catholic game, I fully expect KHSAA to tell refs to be slow on the whistle. So don't get upset next week when it seems like the refs are slow to whistle a play dead. They are going to be told to let the play go until you are certain it is time to blow the whistle and stop the play.

Was it a terrible call? Yes, absolutely. No doubt. But don’t get two extra points blocked and you still more than likely win the game. Corbin still had plenty of opportunities to win this game and did not take advantage.

The line judge being the ref with his back to the camera? Why do you say he is the one that blew the whistle?

It wasn’t the white hat. Sure didn’t sound like it came from that direction. Pretty sure it was the line judge on Boyle side. Just sounded like it was from there. When qb dropped down trying to possess it the qb’s back was too him and I think he just assumed he had covered it when he obviously hadn’t. Just really bad quick whistle. Terrible call.

I feel like I've seen multiple say don't get the extra points blocked and you still (more than likely) win. I don't even think that's true.  Stops were very hard to come by; there were literally zero punts, with a fumble and INT by Corbin being their only failures to score and a turnover on downs for Boyle, with all of that coming in the first half.  If they'd hit both PATs, for starters, you're assuming that Boyle County doesn't go for two after their previous touchdown to make it a seven point game.  They'd have been trailing 28-27, scored to make it 33-28 - they'd have gone for two.  If they got it, then all Corbin would have been doing with the second PAT was tying.  If they hadn't, then in all likelihood Corbin would have gone for two after their last TD to try to go up three.  The first PAT was the big one.

But more importantly, since we've also had a few point out that Corbin still would have had to score to take the lead if the fumble had been called correctly - in your scenario, Boyle County has the ball (probably not at midfield since Corbin wouldn't have onside kicked it), down one, 3:17 left with two timeouts, and probably no worse than 75 yards to paydirt (their average starting field position after a Corbin kickoff was their own 26 yard line, and three of their five kickoffs they started on exactly their own 30).  Considering that Boyle County was stopped only once on the whole night, that being on a turnover on downs in the first half, and not at all in the second half, I find it just as easy to believe that Boyle drives for the winning score as I do that Corbin stops them in that situation.  I would speculate that's the whole reason Corbin didn't go for two instead of trying the tying PAT, because they knew it wasn't a guaranteed slam of the door, and that Boyle County would be using all four downs rather than Corbin potentially getting them to punt.

Finally, and certainly MOST importantly, the players were responsible for the PAT being missed or not missed.  Some in here seem hellbent on reducing the impact of this massive, massive blown call by pointing it back at the players.  Could they have done that? Sure, but at the end of the day, no one has a problem with players making plays, and Boyle made those blocks happen.  An official taking it out of their hands is another matter entirely.  I'm not asking that we draw and quarter the official or even rake him over the coals, but stop trying to let him off the hook either.  It was a massively impactful call that denied Corbin an earned chance to win the game.

Wasn’t the white hat so had to be the line judge.

Corbin should be in championship game - that’s a steal there.

Stolen opportunity, not a stolen win. Definitely not a done deal Corbin is in the title game if that whistle isn't blown. Too much time and too many plays left before the end of the game to say the team that was losing the game would have won.

Yes but unforgivable .  Boyle gets a gift they should be out.  I personally couldn’t in good conscience go after an official to get them to give me the ball there.

Boyle is like the Patriots dynasty or Chiefs dynasty. They get all the calls.

He invited the coach on the field? The white hat needs to go to the coach on the sideline and explain it. The ball was still loose when the whistle blows, unreal, but the correct ruling.
