I don't think it is fair to say Kelly is overrated.  He's won everywhere he has been, including very successful stops at Cincinnati and Notre Dame.  However, I think it is fair to say that he may not be a coach that can get a team to that final step of winning a championship.  At Notre Dame he couldn't defeat Alabama or Clemson (and we've seen with Marcus Freeman that while he might lay an egg against someone like a Marshall or Northern Illinois he can actually beat highly ranked teams and win post-season games against those highly ranked squads from the SEC and Big 10).  Now that he is at LSU and facing even tougher competition week-to-week we are seeing some of this rear its head.  So I'd give him like a "B" in the coaching department.

I thought LSU hiring him was strange.  Kelly's career was more in the Midwest, not the South.  That is not an impediment, as Nick Saban showed when he came from Michigan State, but it just seemed like a weird fit from the word "go" and a lot of newspaper reporters echoed that sentiment.  I do appreciate what Kelly did to revive Notre Dame after the terrible Charlie Weiss years but I was also glad he moved on because I thought he hit a ceiling with the Irish and we weren't getting a title with him at the helm.

When will ND win its next National Championship? It never has happened in the 21st Century. 

I guess it's all relative. There are a bunch of schools that would love to hit that "ceiling" that a poster mentioned. These early and mid-season firings are interesting. The staff the HC hired is still running the program. You can't change everything in a week or two. I think it could be an off shoot of NIL and the portal. Am I fair in saying that if you bring 20 new guys in and they displace people already there, the locker room may not be a happy place?

Payout I believe is around $54 million so I would say that is what the talks about. I wonder if he will do his weekly Monday interview on the Paul Finebaum show?

I've been hearing the same.  I think this is a good fit.

Regarding that list of possible LSU coaches, I think only the top 5 are viable.  Kiffin might decide that staying with an established Ole Miss squad is better than a rebuild at LSU.  Of course he may choose the money.  I understand Sumrall being the favorite but question whether he can have success there.  I'd hire Drinkwitz.

This is a reason I always hesitate when UK fans just assume Sumrall is their next guy. I don't think it's as likely as some others.
