The Va Tech job is interesting, on who they will pursue, and who is likely to take it. I think Shane Beamer, would be their first choice, but would he leave the SEC for the ACC?  Va Tech has done nothing since Daddy Beamer, left and that was a messy situation. Which could have left a sour taste in Shane's mouth as well.

My best friend is a huge Hokie fan, so we talk about them a lot. I think they have to offer Shane or fan base will erupt. That said, I hopes Beamer turns them down quickly (because I don't think he'll come) so that Tech can get busy hiring their actual next coach.

Worst thing about that job is trying to get recruits to come to Blacksburg. NIL money should help though.

What is the deal with the portal when a coach is fired and will any of that change with the portal changes in the future?

I'm not sure I understand your question. The portal is not open now for any players to transfer, I don't think it opens until the first of December.

Can players enter the transfer portal now?

The head coaching changes at UCLA and Virginia Tech triggered a 30-day window for players to enter their names in the NCAA transfer portal and start exploring a move. There's no obligation to decide right away, as these players will also still have the option to enter the portal after the season.

I don't mean be combative in any way, but with teams on week 4 of their schedules, wouldn't that disrupt team chemistry to add a player now? I would imagine that all the NIL money has been exhausted, so there would be no funds for them at the new school. I guess they could sit out the rest of the season and maintain a year of eligibility. I mean we have what kids playing 8 years of college football now. This whole thing is out of control in my opinion.

I know you are trying to help but the way I understand if your coach is fired you can enter the portal immediately.  That doesn't mean many will but it does give you the choice which I like.  I like it because you had a new coach forced on you, not one you agreed to, so if the coach changes, you should be able to change.

Thank you, and I get what you are saying, but somewhere along the line there has to be a limit of how many times, a kid can transfer, and how many years of eligibility he has. I mean we have grown men, 24, 25-year-olds playing college football.

How would this work as a student? How can leave a college half way thru one semester, enroll at another, and be eligible. That is perplexing to me.

I suppose you could take some bi-term classes at the end of the semester that only run 8 weeks or so?  I'm sure schools could craft a 12-hour credit schedule on that for anyone they really wanted to add.

Of course the sad truth is that transferring as much as we see players do today basically wrecks their chance of really earning a degree.  Some it is fine, especially if they were graduate transfer, but guys who are competing for 4-5 schools before their eligibility runs out aren't going to earn a degree from anywhere, which is sad, because the credits will not always transfer with them.
