Covington Catholic 31 Boyle County 28

Outstanding Prep career for Tavey.  He literally “carried” the Rebels tonight as almost every snap was Wildcat in 2nd half.  Harney was equally impressive.  Great HS football game.

  • Congratulations Covington Catholic on a very well played game.  They had a great game plan and at the end won the game.  Good luck going forward!  I knew this was going to be a game!

I thought RPI's were locked down at this point.

Will the win over Boyle County count towards Cov Cath's RPI?

No they are locked. You guys should go to Franklin Co. and Corbin to Paducah Tilghman

I was at the game and we got no explanation for this. Maybe it was discussed on the update thread.

On Cov Caths last drive, after the long run by the QB down to the Boyle 14. Cath had 1st and 10 from the 14. Boyle had 3 timeouts. Boyle got the personal foul facemask on the next play. ½ the distance to the goal automatic 1st down. 1st and goal from the 7. Cov Cath got the new 1st down, but the chains never moved. After 2 more plays and 2 Boyle timeouts, Cov Cath got the ball to the 4 and the refs measured and awarded them another 1st down (after CC had gained 3 yards total) Colonels could then take the knee after gaining a total of 3 yards for a fresh set of downs.

Did anyone watching a stream get an explanation for that?

Facemask is not an automatic first down in high school.  Generally, 15 yards is going to result in one, but in this case, it was only a half the distance penalty and repeat of down.  It was never first and goal.

Roughing calls are the only auto-firsts in high school.

Congrats Covcath!! CovCath a week ago looks like they are going to lose in the second round. Then a week later they take down a national ranked team. You have to love football!!

Not get off subject, but Johnson Central is a very good team and tough to prepare for in a week.

There are no automatic first downs in high school football. So the call was half the distance making it 1st and 3 for the Colonels at the 7 yard line.

Huge Congrats to Covington Team is special!!!!

Win of the year by CC!  Boyle tough loss…Brown was out…a foot away from winning the game to disaster.  Tough way to lose.

Brown being out and losing the turnover battle obviously impacted the game for Boyle. The other thing I was hoping would impact the game was overconfidence from Boyle. No matter how many times you tell 17- and 18-year-old kids a team you whipped last season is capable of turning the tables, it is hard to get that message to resonate. And CovCath had the opposite effect working for them. A proud program coming out fired up and ready to play hard to make up for last year's debacle. Congrats to the Colonel players and coaches on a well-deserved win. On to the next one.
