  • Congrats Covington Catholic, you have a lot to be proud of tonight.

  • Congratulations Covington Catholic on a very well played game.  They had a great game plan and at the end won the game.  Good luck going forward!  I knew this was going to be a game!

Some thought Boyle had a fantastic performance in the state finals last season, while others thought Covington Catholic had a rough game at the wrong time. I tend to think that both ends are right. But considering the score of that state finals game, the players Covington Catholic lost compared to Boyle (I may be off a bit but Boyle County lost maybe nine seniors and Covington Catholic lost at least double that), and how well Boyle County has played this season I would consider this an upset and one of the biggest turnarounds. Here are some I compare it to:

  • Highlands 47-0 over Collins in 2012 in the state finals, and the next year Collins pulled a 37-34 win in a state finals rematch as the underdog where a backup QB had to come in and complete a high pressure 4th down pass to put Collins ahead in the end.
  • Although this was in the same season, in 2005 St. X would defeat rival Trinity 48-16 in the regular season with little trouble. Trinity would defeat St. X 14-6 in the finals.
  • Boyle would defeat Corbin 40-21 in the state championship in 2017 and if I remember right that was a sophomore dominated Boyle team whose only loss was to 2A state champion Danville. The next season Corbin would post a 21-0 shutout in the regional finals which shocked many.
  • Another one in the same season, but Pikeville would defeat Paintsville 62-8 in the 2014 regular season. The two would meet again in the regional semifinals where Paintsville would win 30-6 as big underdogs. There were no major injuries the first time the two teams met.

Good list. One I would add would be from the 1987 season when Boone County handily beat Shelby County in the regular season only to lost to the Rockets 17 - 14 finals.

Still sick over this game.

Really good player. I think he was underrecruited due to injury and lack of production his senior year, but I think he’ll get on the field early there.

I finally watched this game.  Just an incredible high school football game.  Hat's off to both teams.

Thought CovCath's OLine set the tone early and this is the first time I've ever seen Cash Harney play.  Wow, he was impressive.

But the announcers said the first play of the 4th Quarter 36-yard Field Goal by CovCath was only their second of the season.  Wow!  That was a big play momentum wise I think in the rain and all, nice job by their special teams unit.

Great win for CovCath and extra tough way to go out for the Rebels.

So pleased for Oliver, one of the best and most versatile athletes from the class of '25 - also a member of this season's  basketball squad and a stalwart jumper/sprinter on two Colonel state championship track teams. Congrats young man! ?

Right, electric on the field and what a fabulous favorite memory!
