Then what's the fix?

Everyone complained about the old way and back then said RPI was the way to go, that it was fair. Now Everyone is up in arms over RPI, so what is the fix???

Similar only in being a ranking system. That is where the similarity ends. Calpreps.com is head and shoulders more accurate in ranking teams.

Agreed. I was being sarcastic. Seems liked the KHSAA was trying to reinvent the wheel when they developed their own RPI system. Their system really discourages playing out of state games. Beating #12 nationally ranked St. Edward has the same value as beating a terrible Metro team here in Nashville.

Make out of state teams count the same way every other team does.

Does every surrounding state calculate RPI?

If not, would KHSAA have to track every result for every out of state team (that plays a KY school) as well as the results for each of their opponents and their opponents opponents?

You’ve gone one layer too deep there. They’d need to track the win percentage for the opponent and then that of the teams that opponent plays. 
 

That information appears pretty readily on Maxpreps and Calpreps. St. Edwards is 3-1. Their opponents other than Boyle County are a combined 7-3. 11-3 if I include Boyle County. This information took me 45 seconds to compile. I know people who could scrape that information from the web in the blink of an eye. It isn’t difficult.

It's as easy as typing numbers into a spreadsheet and letting it formulate. They already have a pre-made program or sheet that does it for all of the instate teams. You could let the opponents and opponents be the same as the out of state teams WP. Anything is better than .500. 

RPI will bounce around a little bit let's not forget PT dropped multiple spots even though they went 10-0. I hate it for Boyle if the out of state game counts for RPI they would be 1 easy. There's alot of ball to be played still so we will see what happens moving forward. Would be cool to see Tilghman Boyle round 4 but would much rather see it at State.

The KHSAA can also put the onus on the teams playing out-of-state opponents to report, as they do with any team's stats in the state. If you (a Kentucky high school sports program) fail to input your out-of-state opponents' win/loss records and their respective opponents' win/loss records then your out of state opponent gets ranked as they are currently ranked, with a .500 record.

After reviewing the most recent RPI, I believe that if Boyle and PT finish the season undefeated Boyle will pass PT and end up as #2.  They are currently so close and I believe Boyles schedule will allow them to go ahead of PT.  Not sure if they will catch Franklin, but they really don’t have to.

Happened last year.   Last game with Russellville really hurts their RPI.   

I’m pretty sure that Jumper Dad had it correct.  There are a ton of scores that you need to calculate a team’s RPI.  You obviously need the Opponents winning percentage.  But then you also have to get the Opponent’s Opponents winning percent.  You would need at least 100 scores to calculate RPI the same way KHSAA does.

Again, there are readily available systems for this.

You’ll note that their win percentage is right there on the page. 3-2, .600, as of this posting.

Click on any of those teams - for instance Washington. You’d see they are 4-1, .800. Rinse and repeat for the other teams. It takes almost no time at all. And that’s doing it manually - you can code your system to pull this data automatically and run the calculations.
