This is incorrect. In high school there are some public schools who choose to limit themselves to physical school zones. Belfry is a public school and for years they have allowed kids from out of their district to pay tuition and attend and play sports at Belfry. David Jones was one of those kids. He lived in West Virginia and went to Belfry. Owensboro Senior, Ashland, Raceland, Highlands, Beechwood, they all allow kids to come in from out of their school district. Same in Ohio. Princeton High School is a public high school that does it. I worked for years with a guy who had lived in Dayton and drove down to Princeton for high school every day because his dad worked down at the GE plant on the north side of Cincinnati and his family wanted him at Princeton instead of in Dayton Public Schools. Swam for Princeton's team for 4 years and ended up going to UC on a partial scholly for swimming.

Cronyism at its finest. I'm not sure why the NFHS decided to hire a dinosaur of their industry, but the NFHS doesn't really have a track record of major success with technology either. Their streaming platform is an absolute clunker at best.

The current RPI formula is pure laziness from the KHSAA.

Public and state colleges totally eclipse the total number of football national championships, men's NCAA basketball tournament championships, and men's NIT basketball tournament championships that private colleges have. Why aren't private colleges throwing a temper tantrum, wetting their diapers and trying to start their own separate national championships? Hot take. Public school educators like these folks in the Suburban league should start acting like grownups instead of babies. When you're preparing these high schoolers to be sent out into the world as adults teach them a valuable life lesson, life isn't fair, and expecting it to be is gonna cause you nothing but disappointment on a whole lotta levels.

Yahoo Sports has the HL article mirrored on their site. Evidently Matthew Amburgey stood in for Hawkins on a couple of preseason shows, he's the OC and QB coach. During Glicod's preseason show on Aug 5 Amburgey apparently said that he was standing in for Hawkins due to illness and during Prepspin's preseason show on Aug 17 there wasn't any direct mention of Hawkins's status but Amburgey spoke in a manner that implied that Hawkins was still head coach. The article says that the FCPS confirmed on Aug 17 that Hawkins has been placed on administrative leave and the team's Arbiter page currently shows Phillip Hawkins and Timothy McCoy both listed as head coach.

Great question. I ran into our school's new stats guy last night at the gas station and he told me he still hasn't heard boo from the KHSAA as far as instructions on how to use Arbiter or enter stats on the site for the upcoming football season. Decided to try registering myself and seeing what things looked like on there and as someone who isn't a coach, official, or parent. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to register either. These are the options you have for your categories when registering. I figured families/students might be some sort of general "fan" view of the site but then after clicking that it immediately started asking questions about student guardianship, so that's evidently not the answer. If this is supposed to be something that's "extremely precious" to Commissioner Tackett and this is the most capable Tackett is at handling that "extremely precious" thing, then I think the KHSAA's head honcho is either grossly unqualified to do his job or grossly past his capable prime. Time for him to hang it up.

The multiplier idea would work way more equitably if they apply a multiplier it to the actual number of students that are attending a school from outside of their district.

If you look at that chart that C_W_B put in that thread about the past coaching changes, there's a big year that happens roughly once every 10 years. In the 80's the big year was 1988 when they had 42 changes, then it was 9 years until the big year from the 90's when they had 55 changes in 1997, then it was 8 years until the big year from the 00's when they had 56 changes in 2005, then 10 years until the big year from the 10's when they had 51 changes in 2015, and now it's been 11 years and it's currently the big year for the 20's with 57 changes.

Guess I could be wrong about what all I'm remembering of it but I thought in 2021 or 2022 Kentucky passed a law that all districts have to have some measure in place for allowing non-resident students to attend, even though it may not be an 'open enrollment' type of situation. I'd like to see a total tally of football players getting college offers at Boyle and Male over the last 5-10 years. Especially FBS and FCS offers. I've got a sneaking suspicion that Boyle would come out ahead of Male. Male obviously gets some very talented players, but Boyle is right there with Male if they're not a step ahead in talent.

So who would your top choices be?

It's not that simple in a magnet school.

JCPS just finally got around to getting Male turf for their field and their school's operating in a second-hand building. They don't broadcast their own games because they don't have internet out in their pressbox and JCPS isn't willing to spend the money to run it out there. They wouldn't even do it while the field was being renovated for the new turf. I don't think I'm going out on much of a limb saying that Male's resources are well below whatever resources Haddix has at Boyle.

You're put in charge of hiring the next head coach, and you have a magic wand that gets you any 4 coaches that are currently in the high school coaching ranks around the country interested in interviewing for the job at Highlands. Who are your 4?

Male seems like the caliber of job that has the potential to make Brandon Smith consider moving from Bowling Green to Louisville.

Highlands hired a guy who is in the sunset of his career. I remember back when he was hired and there were folks talking about how close he was to retirement in Georgia and how surprising it was to see him move to a new job in a new state at that point in his career. There were folks saying, "If you know Bob you know he has a lot of coaching left to do." I remember reading that and thinking "Eghhhhh I don't know about that." It's clear that whatever edge Sphire had is fading away faster and faster. Dude is almost 70. Most guys at that age are retiring. Those who haven't retired yet are rare to begin with, and the ones who haven't retired and are still as on top of things as they were 20 years prior are even more rare. Everything I've heard seems to indicate that Bob took this job to try and insure a career path for Hayden. From the sound of things Hayden isn't catching on quickly enough to be taken realistically as the heir to Bob at Highlands. I think this was a hopeful move on the part of AD Caldwell after the Eddie James hire backfired and the Chris Wolfe deal didn't materialize. Caldwell was hoping that hiring his good 'ol ball coach from back in Lexington would make for a grand slam hire in Fort Thomas. Half a decade and zero state championships or state finals appearances later for Highlands, it appears that his hire was only really a standing double, or maybe a triple.

Sounds like Ethan Atchley is a name we can definitely expect to not be in the discussion.

Highlands' offensive coaching missteps and Highlands' offense being out-coached seem like constantly recurring topics game after game after game. Does Bob Sphire have the self-awareness to see that it was a mistake for him to hand his son Hayden the keys to the offense of one of the most storied football program in the state? And if he does have the self-awareness, does he have the cojones to actually make the necessary change? Pretty sure Highlands football is currently in their longest ever run without a state championship. Bob Sphire was hired to right the ship and change that situation. Dude's like 5 years into the job, we're still not seeing the change, and there are still the same old complaints about Sphire's nepotism hire making the same mistakes every year. If I was more of a Birds fan I would be pretty sick of it by now.

Kevin Wallace currently has 361 wins. He's retiring after the 2025 season so he isn't going to have a shot at the top 3. If you throw out the short 2020 season, Hilton has averaged 10 wins per season in the last 10 full seasons, and French has averaged 9 wins. Hilton currently has 443 wins and French currently has 369. At his current pace Hilton would need 5 more seasons to overtake Coach Haywood at the top of the football coaching wins list, and French would need 14 more seasons. Hilton is 75 and I Larry French is 77. I can see Hilton maybe doing it, but I've gotta think there's no way for French. Jim McKee is next on the leaderboard for active coaches with 278 wins. He's 55 now and will need to average 10 wins a season for the next 22 years to overtake Haywood.

Reading through this thread makes me feel like there are fingers being pointed in all different directions. Is it Beechwood and Highlands and CCH's fault that Conner hasn't had more success? Is it Conner's past coaching staff not being able to win and losing prospective players to schools with more winning traditions? Is it Conner's feeder program not doing what they should do? What have Ryle and Cooper managed to do that Conner hasn't been able to do in order to win? There's gotta be something. I know Boone County's program has fallen on tough times because of demographic changes around the county but I stayed at the Marriott near the Airport for a wedding on NYE and drove around Hebron a little bit. Looked like houses were popping up like weeds up that way. Sure seems like they should have some kids in those houses just like they do in Union.

Larue's players were trying to get out. Larue had 5 runs earned on walks alone. They could have intentionally batted out of order, yeah, but if you're gonna do that why not just go ahead and holler over to the other dugout "Hey you guys should just forfeit to us, dontcha think?" Hart beat Caverna 27-0 in 5 innings couple weeks ago. Green Co. beat them 22-0 in 3 innings earlier in the season. The Caverna baseball program is just that bad.
