Open Job: Christian County (New School)

Featured Replies

Initially announced back in the spring of 2021, Hopkinsville & Christian County high schools will officially be consolidating into one school, set to open its doors for the 2026-2027 school year.

Hopkinsville High School opened as a public school in February of 1881 after having existed for 5 years as a private school. Their Tigers football team started some time around the 1897 season. Christian County High School opened its doors in 1959 with the consolidation of South Christian, Sinking Fork, Crofton, and Lacy high schools. Their Colonels football team started in the 1961 season.

The new consolidated school was originally scheduled to open for the 2025-2026 school year, and was set by the KHSAA to compete in 6A football. When the opening of the new school was delayed, the KHSAA moved 4A Hopkinsville High School up to 6A, joining Christian County, which was already a 6A program. The Hopkinsville Tigers, coached by Dustin Lopez, played their final game on Nov 14, wrapping up a 7-5 final season. The Christian County Colonels started their final season under coach Ethan Atchley, but after Atchley resigned from the job following their fourth game of the season, the Colonels were coached by interim head coach Kelly Myers for the rest of the season, and played the final game of their 1-9 season on Oct 31.

The new school's Christian County Tigers football program will be a 6A program. With Hopkinsville's 2024 enrollment of 938 (489 boys) and Christian County's 2024 enrollment of 1189 (601 boys), the new school is poised to become the third largest high school in the state with 2127 students. Lafayette is currently the largest school with a 2024 enrollment of 2379, and Madison Central is the second-largest with a 2024 enrollment of 2264. The new consolidated Christian County High School's boys enrollment of 1090 boys is going to place them at the 4th most in 6A behind Trinity (1261), Lafayette (1200), and Madison Central (1169).

Big school, big job, and big potential.

Who can we expect to be in the discussion as head football coach at the new Christian County High School?

Sounds like Ethan Atchley is a name we can definitely expect to not be in the discussion.

Anyone know which school colors they will use?

Thank goodness someone is asking the important questions! Is there any word on a mascot or logo?

In all seriousness, the color scheme in all the plans for the new school looks ‘MLB-Umpireish.’ A mix of powder blue and dark blue.

… and orange is involved as well. I’m not a fan…

Here is a link that includes a logo and the color scheme.

There's a ton of potential here if they can make a good hire. That persons top priority is to get the fanbase united and bring the excitement back to the program. Secondly, get the best athletes on the field. The talent between these 2 programs should be right up there with anyone if they can do this. Then develop the elementary and middle school programs up for the future.

Why am I wondering are these two consolidating to become such a massive school (3rd largest in Ky)?  Reducing opportunities for lots of kids to participate in all types of programs that are numbers limited.  But this thread is about the football coaching position and I will say it is a premier opportunity that should attract some great coaches.

This is so unnecessary, this sports program will never be any good because they don’t have the players that come out of Louisville and Lexington. It’s so dumb in this state how we do things we consolidate all these schools and then they figure out on this school is to big so they break out and have a south north west or whatever version of the county. Why do they even consolidate to begin with. I hate seeing these city schools disappear just so we can have another version come later on called south west or whatever.

I would think Coach Dustin Lopez would be in the running for the job.  He has done a decent job with Hoptown the past few years and has built relationships around the community.  I do think it would be hard to take on the consolidated job being the head coach of one of the two that is combining.  People would be quick to pull the "favoritism" card if he were to play a former Hoptown kid over a former Christian County kid.

I wouldn't call a school that size massive. Yes it's big for Kentucky, but in many places it wouldn't be considered all that unusual in size.

That sounds like a job for Denzel Washington and Will Patton.....

I would give the job to Coach Lopez tomorrow. No one gave Hoptown any accolades coming into the season. Hoptown is a 4A school thrown into 6A. AND they competed better than most 6A schools they faced.
Seems easy to me but I guess that is what scares me. This consolidation group hasn’t made anything easy.

I've GOT to think the athletic department gives Coach Lopez first swing at this job. That's gotta be the first call.

No, it isn't. Hoptown and Christian Co. have been basically devoid of talent for a while now.

That district has nosedived in football. Since 2020, six seasons, between the two schools, there have been three winning seasons (all by Hoptown). Christian Co. has fallen to a place where Caverna was willing to schedule them and only lost 32-40.

And it's not just Christian Co./Hopkinsville... several of the staples of WKY have fallen off talent-wise. Trigg, Christian Co., Hopkinsville, and Russellville have all fallen into a drought of the steady flows of talent that they once enjoyed.

They are actually both part of the Christian County School System, as odd as that is to hear. It's the same in Floyd County with Prestonsburg. Off name alone, you'd think Hopkinsville (and 50-60+ years ago they were) was Independent, same with P-Burg, but they are part of each county system.

The main reason they did this (and, I'm not faulting, nor fan- all TBD) was financially. Both Christian County High School and Hopkinsville High School were (and, past due) for new high schools. Fiscally more responsible to build one....than two.

As for who the coach should be? I'm echoing what was already said. Give it....no, correction...Dustin Lopez has EARNED it. On top of that? Being from there and that entire community meaning what it does to him? He will help bridge and of the disgruntled.

The kids will be fine. I'm not saying it will be perfect, but when comparing it to the adults? The kids won't be the problem...like most things, the bulk problems will come from adults that don't want it to happen, yet will want to see it fail (and, that's not singling out Hoptown/County- that's any and everywhere this has happened).
