Any ideas on when the realignment for the 2027-2028 is going to happen?

That won't take place until well after the 26 season is played.  Usually teams are aligned and then they get an opportunity to appeal things or ask to be placed in another district, then the districts are finalized.  I think the last one was completed in May.  

I thought I recall something about going back to a 4 year stretch this next realignment period.  But maybe I am not recalling it correctly.

I think that was brought up but I believe they will realign in 27 and may go back to a 4 year alignment period after that.  There are still some schools claiming that their numbers are inflated from having to use the covid enrollment numbers and this next alignment will be the 1st time that data isn't being used.

A lot can change in two years though, I don’t mind them going back every other year to reassess. Believe it has beneficial for all.

Ok. Wasn't sure since last time they announced the draft alignment before the second year of that alignment period.

It was drafted in February the year before it went into effect and then finalized that May so maybe later next month?

The most recent realignment used data from 2022-23 and 2023-24. Assuming the KHSAA stays on a two-year cycle, that means they'll use data from 2024-25 and 2025-26. The 2025-26 enrollment data hasn't been released yet (usually comes out in January - have to have completed 100 days of school, maybe?). It was released on February 21, 2024, so I'd look for something in the next 6 weeks or so.

I posted this info about realignment in another thread back in late November:

Have they said they are going to continue with the new class/district alignments every two years, or is there still the possibility that they might go back to their traditional four-year alignment cycles? I know the initial cause for the two-year realignment cycle was the whole bugaboo caused by issues with documented enrollment during COVID and the repeat year that went into effect after COVID, so I know they split up what would have otherwise been the 2023-2026 football realignment into a 2023-2024 realignment and then a 2025-2026 realignment. I don't remember ever hearing official word from the KHSAA that they're going to stick with the two-year cycles moving forward...but that doesn't mean they may not have said at some point or another that they plan on doing so.

Based on the timelines from the past 4 football realignments, it looks like the KHSAA tries to have their initial draft of the realignment released to the member schools for their review a year and a half before initial kickoff of the first season under the new alignment. There was a definite hiccup there for the 2023-2024 alignment because they were trying to work around the fact that they were left with incomplete enrollment numbers from the Board Of Education for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years due to all of the COVID stuff. Assuming they stick with their generalized 18 month lead time for the draft of the next alignment, though, that means we should see something coming out for proposed districts for the next alignment roundabout their January 2026 Board Of Control meeting...so about 2 months from now.

- Final BOC-approved alignment released by KHSAA on 13 May 2014
- Draft issued 19 months prior to 2015 kickoff, approved release issued 16 months prior.

KHSAA Football Alignment 2019-2022 Seasons
- Proposed draft released by KHSAA on 21 Feb 2018 (18 months before 2019 kickoff)
- Final BOC-approved alignment released by KHSAA on 9 May 2018 (16 months before 2019 kickoff)
- Revised due to COVID-19 pandemic on 20 Oct 2020
- Draft issued 18 months prior to 2019 kickoff, approved release issued 16 months prior.

KHSAA Football Alignment 2023-2024 Seasons
- I don't know for sure, but I believe it was after their July 2022 Board Of Control meeting that the KHSAA announced that rather than conducting their typical realignment for the upcoming 4 football seasons (2023-2026), they would instead be conducting an alignment that would be in place for 2 seasons (2023-2024) and then realign again for 2 seasons (2025-2026) after that.

I was under the impression that the last realignment was a 4 year cycle. Is that not the case? I do not think another realignment will come until after the 28 season.

The KHSAA was calling it the 2025-2026 realignment all along. And here's a look at the title of the currently football alignment page on the KHSAA's website.

I would have to think DeSales will go back to 2A when the new realignment occurs. 
 

We currently have 30 fewer boys enrolled than the smallest 3A school has.
 

When they chose the years they did to determine the average enrollment last time, it included one of the biggest classes the school has had in a long time—due to a one-year influx of students when lots of families chose in-person instruction at DeSales over NTI w/ JCPS. 
 

Our current enrollment puts us actually just above the middle of class 2A (we’d be 25th largest 2A school out of the 40 schools currently in 2A).

Switched to every two years for the '23 and '24 seasons and '25 and '26 seasons.  I thought that I read that they were going to stay with every 2 years for a while, but I might be remembering that incorrectly.  

I hope the KHSAA takes the realignment that was created by the AI model into consideration this time.  That seemed to fix a lot of the travel issues and makes the most sense considering the districts are only supposed to be created based off travel.
