Colonels_Wear_Blue Posted May 1 Posted May 1 Junior Matthews' retirement announcement at Letcher County Central makes LCCHS the 56th high school in the state that will have a new head coach for the 2026 football season. The KHSAA has 224 member football programs. That's exactly one quarter of all the football teams. Ouch. 2
Tkinslow Posted May 1 Posted May 1 Wow! That’s amazing I doubt anyone would have the information on this but would be curious if that’s the most ever. 1

We have a blow-by-blow record here on BGP going back to through the 2015 season. There are links to each of those years' Open Jobs/Filled Jobs threads in this year's thread. There were 54 jobs that turned over in 2015, but this year is the high-water mark for the past 12 years. I'm working on cooking something up for the record of things going back to the early 1980's. Stay tuned. 7
wingt51 Posted May 1 Posted May 1 Lack of money in teaching/coaching+ lack of support from admin/parents + amount of time required = not even close to worth it to for most sane humans. Sad reality. 2 1

Sad reality. I have said it before and I will keep saying it. A head football coach that is also a full time teacher should be a 100K position. As far as I am concerned, that is two full time jobs and 100K is probably low, just sayin'. 8

Head football coaches do A LOT, and there’s a lot more involved outside of the sports side of things, which is broad enough alone. This is the case for coaches of pretty much all sports now. 1
hrcarrier Posted May 1 Posted May 1 While this isn’t a good statistic, it isn’t a surprise to me and I could see this trend increasing. 1

Sad reality. This right here. The lack of money and time required has always been an issue, but I think most coaches still felt it was worth it and were willing to deal with that aspect of it. I think the reason why we see so many coaches leave now, is cause of the lack of support from admin/parents. As the parent issue is a huge problem these days, and makes the first two issues not even worth dealing with anymore. It literally has become a no win situation for coaches, because of parents. Parents complaining has led to good coaches no reason being let go, when the soul reason was because their little jimmy wasn’t play or wasn’t the star. Yet the schools give in to those parents and let the coach go and don’t support their coach. Or on the flip side schools back their coaches, and parents then go crazy on social media acting like the school is toxic and aren’t doing anything about the parents complaints. When most of the time the parents complaints is still mainly cause little Jimmy isn’t the star or playing as much as they think. It is a no win situation for coaches these days, and no surprise why their is so many openings.

Not football, but this is the reason I'd rather have my nose slammed in a car door than to darken the door of a school building ever again, much less a coach's office. Doubled my income last year, and will never look back. Admin can have it. 1

Falcon Pride Posted May 2 Posted May 2 All true statements. If parents actually knew (or cared!)what all went into “coaching” their sons and daughters, maybe they would keep off social media, and emails to the AD and Principal, and Superintendents. But they don’t. 2
PTHSalumni Posted May 2 Posted May 2 From what I remember, coach Cox left Tilghman because the new principal told him he had to start teaching. Coach didn't teach at all and put his energy into the program, which lead to PT getting on national television with the Mayfield game, and getting games scheduled with teams nationally ranked. He worked hard to get those things done. He told the principal that the program cannot maintain the current success if he started teaching. It was either teach or get fired. Coach was too proud to get fired so he resigned. @TilghmanPrideIf you have anything to add or correct let us know. Thanks. 2
