CCH would have to find a way to compensate him for whatever he'd lose making the jump from public to private. I've had a handful of folks tell me that they heard Coach Sullivan was interviewed. I can't say for sure whether or not that much is true, but to me, it sure doesn't seem likely to have happened based on the initial word following the announcement that Coach Ruthsatz had stepped down.

The rumors I've heard all said that Cov Cath would have to "buy out" the remainder of Coach Sullivan's retirement from KTRS. Your wording of "compensate him" would probably be a more accurate way of trying to describe whatever that plan would be, but I don't see that happening. Frankly, I don't see the Diocese being okay with any of their schools trying to set the precedent of paying to compensate someone for their retirement losses from a previous job. Not to mention that Cov Cath is a high school -  where education is, and should be, the priority above sports. Would they pay to "buy out" a math teacher's retirement in order to get them on staff? I don't see that happening in a million years. Why on earth would they extend that consideration to a coach.

This is a high school athletic department that we're talking about, not a Power Five college.

Wouldn't it make more sense (and dollars and cents) to let Sullivan continue coaching in the public school system until he can retire?

How many years would that be?

I know they want the head coach" in the school" - but I see this option happening before I see the " buy out" the remainder of his retirement.

I agree that CovCath and the Diocese is most likely not going to “buy out” a retirement plan, but to your comments in the bold - if you don’t think Eviston and Ruthsatz received significant benefits, including pay structures and/or investment tools far beyond say what the math department is receiving, then you are out of touch with reality. (And not saying you specifically CWB, just those in general.) 

Especially after Moeller (x2), Trinity, and GT College came after Eddie. I don’t know what or who, but Rowe and Baci went out and found something to keep Coach Eviston to stay. I can’t speak to if Ruthsatz was sought after by other schools, programs (I’d have to guess he was), but they either did the same or would have done the same.

Yes, it’s a high school and academics come first, but high school sports, especially basketball and football at a place like CovCath, is just as crucial to the student than anything, I’d even argue, far more important in the grand scheme of things than a HS math class. 

Point being, if CovCath wants to get someone, and there is mutual interest from that candidate, Rowe and Baci are very competent, competitive, and savvy leaders, they will find a way. Whether it’s boosters putting up additional bonuses, setting up some additional retirement account/vehicle, or what have you, they’ll get it done. They will not, however, do this for a Math teacher - I don’t care how good he/she is. So, they do extend considerations to coaches (football and basketball specifically) that they do not extend to a teacher only position.

Football is far more important in the grand scheme of things than math? There are 400-some-odd kids at CCH who don't play football or basketball. My guess is most of those kids couldn't give two hoots about who's coaching the teams. Their math teachers, though, that may matter a little more. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that math is a lot more important to their grand schemes than high school football. What is it that they say, something like, "The first step is admitting that you have a problem"?

From my perspective the reason why you can so readily find so many CCH grads from the 1990s who are opting to send their sons to Holy Cross, Ryle, Beechwood, Cooper and St. Henry is because of that precise attitude. People hear "Covington Catholic" and they don't think "great high school." Instead they hear it and they think "athletic department that happens to have a high school attached to it." The administrators at CCH could really do to put their ear to the ground and listen every once in a while to what their community of alumni really thinks about the way they are running things. They frankly might pick up a little bit on the bevy of folks who were starting to quietly wish the Rowe regime was a thing of the past.

If money is apparently no object, since we're talking about buying out retirements here, then CCH should look across the river to the Director of Player Development at UC. It seems like having an alum coaching at least one of their athletic programs would be a nice touch.

And yes, my football experience in high school was far more impactful than any math class I took in high school. My groomsmen in my wedding - all teammates. Who visited the house my mother got sick? Coach Ray. Not any teacher I had.  

If you do not see the significance of athletics, and what one can do for a young person - confidence, strength both mentally and physically, discipline, accountability, and so much more, I can’t help you. And none of this was learned in a math class at CovCath. I'm not making the argument that there isn't any significance to athletics. If that were the case I never would have coached a day in my life. But as someone who played football from pewee league through high school and was on the track & field team for all of high school, I never hung out with anyone from either team, nor did I have any groomsmen from the football or track team, and I'm 99% positive the head coaches never knew either of my parents' names, much less visited them when they were hospitalized. I have been on a charity board with one teacher I had and on various committees with two other teachers. Point being, your experience was that your football coach was a great guy. My experience was that mine was just okay, but my experience was that my teachers were much more important to my life. And there are significantly more students in a high school who are impacted directly by teachers than there are students impacted directly by any one football coach or basketball coach. I'm glad you liked your coach. That's cool. But math is more important than football.

Well what I can say I am hearing is it only down to 2 candidates:

Jake Thelen - current UC Basketball Director of Player Development and former Georgia Bulldog Asst. Coach and  most importantly Colonel Hoopster Alumni and far and above the runaway first choice for the job.

Tim “Sully” Sullivan - current Cooper Jags Head Ball Coach and 2nd on the short list of only these 2 candidates.

Hearing that basically it is Thelen’s job at this point if He wants it as they want an Alum back in the building and to get Sully, as previously mentioned, there would absolutely need to be a buyout or bonus to cover the loss of His retirement and no one involved is happy or quick to want to go down that road and I agree completely.  As said earlier this is High School and not a power 5 college.

This would only go to a National Search should those 2 not get/take the job as there is no one else local to NKY they want.  Both have already interviewed and I am told both most certainly want this job.  

No timetable but I am being told, but they are working on this at light speed and want it all wrapped up right now.

How does this coaching shake up effect Athens looking elsewere?  Does he now stay or still look across the river?
