You all have been together for 11.5 years so you may already have figured this out, but create very reasonable and rationale boundaries with your family and your wife's family (holidays, time spent together, coming over, advice, etc.). If they do not like it; they can get over it; in my experience they grumble for a short period and it quickly passes. Your priority is you and her (and future kids, should you go that route), not your original family or her original family.

We have briefly had this conversation already, and it stemmed from having our daughter (11 months old). We don’t have any family in Louisville, so it’s not like they can quickly or easily intrude, but we’ve talked about being “selfish” when it comes to our family time going forward.

Thanks everyone! Great advice and I’ve definitely taken notes.  Yesterday was perfect. Couldn’t be happier with how the day turned out. Best day of my life.

  • Always think of your wife and family first in any decision you make.

Pray together.

As a divorced guy; give her half your money, let her kick you in the groin and call it even.  LOL

In all seriousness, just communicate, constantly.

Communication is rule #1. You have to keep talking even when you disagree.

Be life giving. Both of you need to think about how you can give to each other.

Trust each other.

Enjoy your wedding day. Don't worry about things that don't go as planned. You are the only one that will know. Just have fun.

Roll with changes.

What changes, you ask?  Your relationship over time; kids; family; priorities; setbacks; struggles; careers; friends;  relocation; vacation preferences and almost anything you can thing of.   Basically just about everything - over time - and sometimes suddenly, will change in some manner.

Those that want to keep things like they are or were on their wedding day seem to have struggles.

Married life, not unlike single life, is a journey with many, many milestones - but no ending or static destination.   Enjoy and celebrate the milestones!  And be resilient - as a team - when the challenges come.  And they will come.

Congratulations on this new phase of the journey for both you!

Been married to my high school sweetheart 43 years.  Few pieces of advice for you both.

As my mama always said “Don’t make mountains out of mole hills.”

Put each other first…before your mom, siblings, friends…and yourself.

Be best friends.

If you can do those things (which is not always easy), you will avoid a lot of problems and and make other problems easier to tackle.

Congratulations on your wedding and best of luck for a long happy marriage.

That is actually a very good piece of advice. ?

Congratulations @TheDeuce, I wish you both a lifetime of good health and happiness.  It won't always be easy, but it will always be worth it.

If my math is right, today is your day @TheDeuce.  Congrats to you and your bride, make sure she knows what a big deal you are on BGP, she needs to know how lucky she is!!

Have fun today, brother, soak it up!!

Congrats my man, many years of happiness for you!

Take it a day at a time and win more days than you lose. That’s the advice that’s kept me and mine going strong. Congrats!

Congrats Deuce.

As someone late to the party, never, ever let anyone in her family stay with you longer than a weekend.

The rush I felt standing at the altar when my bride started her walk down the aisle - still at the top of the list of best emotional rush of my life.

Glad to hear your wedding day was a great one.
