Paducah Tilghman (2-1) at South Warren (1-2)

The Blue Tornados roll east into Warren County to take on the Spartans.  Both teams are coming off very hard fought defeats in their last outing.  For Paducah Tilghman, they gave everything they had when they went toe to toe with arch-rival Mayfield and came up just short 16-14.  These 2 teams were within 10 yards of each other on yards gained for the game and several controversial calls act as salt in the old wounds for sure.  But I still believe, as last season proved, that this Tilghman team is a strong contender for the 3A title this year.  Games like this one, barring significant injury, will help them get there.  My man, TilghmanPride, will provide a great Blue Tornado’s perspective in the next thread entry.

 

South Warren was also on the road having traveled into Indiana to take on a good 3A Gibson Southern, Indiana squad, but fell late 28-24 in a close game.  Long story short is that South Warren played very well most of this game.  It was close most of the game with South leading 14-13 at the start of the 4^th quarter.  Then late in the 4^th quarter with just over 2 minutes to go South led 24-13.  Gibson Southern then drove the field and scored, went for 2 and got it.  Then South fumbled and GS scored again to make it the final 28-24 in a whirlwind.  No stats available yet, but sounded like a close game all the way through.

@DragonFire researched that this is the first 2 consecutive losses for South in 5 years.  The only other time was when they lost the first five games in the programs history 11 years ago.  And also the first losing record at any point in a season in a decade.  But that’s quite a streak!

I look for South Warren to come out pretty angry in this game.  It will be tough for Tilghman on Friday night, but I do think the Blue Tornados can have some success.  QB Jack James is a real player!

Coming in to the season, it was almost a given that Tilghman would…

1.Throw the ball any and everywhere

2.Get Malachi Rider running downhill when needed

3.Hopefully have an average defense to stay in some games 

 

The exact opposite has shown to be true so far and the new formula will go a long way in determining PT’s fortunes against one of the better 2 loss teams in the state. Tilghman’s defense is big, they are fast and they are as good as I’ve seen in quite some time out of the Tornado. Malachi Rider and the running game behind that huge offensive line look very formidable. The passing game has taken a lesser role. The loss to Mayfield might have rewritten how the Tilghman offense has to operate going forward and shown them some things they didn’t even realize. 

 

Tilghman’s defense registered 8.5 tackles for loss against Mayfield, the second most in the last 4+ seasons of teams who have reported against the Cardinals. That’s no easy task. 

 

South Warren does a great job of spreading the ball around to multiple receivers on offense and will look to keep PT guessing. Both of South Warren’s losses are by less than a touchdown and to very good out of state teams. South is definitely the favorite. PT’s defense will need another stellar performance. I have a feeling this one will lean heavily towards that side of the ball for both teams. 

 

Could we be in for another 8-7 game like they had in their very first meeting in 2013 in the playoff game?  Both teams have the ability to make a statement in this one. 

 

CalPreps has South Warren 16th overall in the state, P.T. 26th overall and has South Warren winning 27-21. 

 

 Tilghman has Henderson County, Henry County (Tn) and Union County all in the next month as well. They could very well end up with a sub-par record heading into the playoffs once again. We will find out how good that defense really is. 

 

I’m going with SW in a close one 28-24.

Would like to see this one.

I think this will be a very interesting game!

After seeing Gibson Southern beat SW - I think I favor PT.  I could see it going either way.

I was going to say South Warren by 3 TDs & I agree with the score being similar to what you have.

I don't know if PT will beat SW but I expect a great effort by the Blue Tornados.

This is a hard game to read.  Gotta give PT props for their strength of schedule.  Three out of their next four games are tough ones.  They will be battle hardened come playoff time, regardless of outcomes.
