Danville is not in the realm of top of 2A currently. Somerset isn’t either unless the Smith twins were to return.

Agree.  I think Somerset is still a year away.  They have really strong underclassmen.

I think it’s a 3 horse race, with Mayfield charging the finish line with LCA and BW.    People are very blinded by the loss of Hergott for BW. He meant a ton no doubt, but Defense wins titles.

  • That guy looks pretty tough but I haven't seen him in awhile.

Danville finished at #5 in 2A last season. Where do you see them at the start on this season?

I’d say right around there competing for fourth with O Cath. I think Beechwood and LCA are in a league of their own. Mayfield comes in behind them on their own. Then the rest. I think Somerset could be fourth. They have some nice pieces they got from McCreary, but I think fourth is a long way from the top talent wise.

If I had to pick right now I’d go with LCA over Beechwood. I think Boley will have more impact than Robinson.

The overall impact is a tough call. Boley's skillset at quarterback is fantastic. Does he play any defense though?

Robinson is obviously talented on the defensive side of things, seeing as that's where his college ticket was punched...but he was also a two-way player. Last year he was Florida Christian's return specialist, he had 263 yards receiving, and ran for 452 yards and 9 TDs when he switched in at quarterback. He elevates his team's play any time he's on the field, and he has the ability to be on the field for every play of the game.

Judging overall impact is tough with both players showing up to play for a new team this season, but without seeing either them on film at their new digs. I think I'd give the nod to Robinson as the bigger impact player just because he's such a talent on both sides of the ball.

Mid-Season Reassessment

We've reached the fifty yard line of the regular season. How do we feel about this subject now? This reassessment is timely, following the events of last night. Beechwood got handled, thoroughly, by Covington Catholic and LCA was dominated in every way by Lexington Catholic. The Eagles are now 2-3, albeit against the strongest schedule in the class.

Deficiencies have been exposed. Quarterback play is front and center at the moment for both, as they are currently without their QB1s when the season began. Is the Tigers and Eagles retaining their positions as 2A favorites simply a matter of improving/getting healthy at the most important position on the field?

Has Mayfield done enough to close the gap? The Cards really only have one win to hang their hat on. Can Owensboro Catholic flip a switch and summon the form they used to take down Owensboro? It looked for a while like the Aces were smelling another another upset win last night, before CAL flipped its switch and turned the competition's lights out.

Who's standing firm on their vote, who would change their's if they could, and who's on the fence?

I believe it is the still the same cast of characters in 3 of the 4 Final 4 spots in November. The big question will be who will be at full strength in the home stretch. I would love to see BW and Mayfield meet in a final. Is that a possibility?

That question comes down to KHSAA RPI. I think Mayfield is a lock to be #1 in the RPI. The wild card is where is LCA going to be? Three losses will hurt a lot in the way KHSAA RPI works. Beechwood should be #2 in RPI. Will LCA be able to get to #3? If not, then Mayfield may get lined up to host LCA in the semifinals with the winner facing Beechwood - assuming of course these three are still truly the top 3 teams in the class and win out the rest of the way. I still say Owensboro Catholic is a darkhorse that can upset all the above. I don't see anyone else in 2A as a threat.

Good stuff in this thread, I can't wait!

I honestly don’t know if Green County can beat Beechwood, Mayfield, or LCA if all are healthy, but I do believe if they continue to improve and build on the success of the last two weeks and the young guys have a full season of play, they could very well upset the top three if they aren’t at full strength. The Dragons skill guys can play with anyone, it’s just a matter of line play and if the defense continues to improve.

Plus everyone seems to be ignoring Metcalfe county, who is massive across the front line and has some really good play at the skill spots as well. They are a really solid team, and I think they could pull an upset as well if they get and stay healthy.

I’d say it’s still Beechwood, LCA, Mayfield among the top. Hard to say who will play who, because the RPI will have everything out of whack. In an ideal world as a tigers fan, you’d like for LCA and mayfield to beat up on each other and then play one of those two in the finals. Hard to say. When RPI comes out I think it gives us a picture of how this all will play out. As a Tiger fan I’d love for a Mayfield Final. Something about that rivalry being a state championship just makes it more exciting to me. I’ve witnessed the last two state championships, I love the rivalry that’s been created, but gimme the cards in the finals, and not because I think they are a weaker team. I’d love to see that rivalry on the biggest stage.

I say RPI

1 Mayfield

2 Beechwood

3 LCA

and the rest is a toss up.

OCath maybe if the win out.  They lost to CAL  (#1 3A) and Union Co (#5 3A and may move up).

I have heard but I could be wrong if Beechwood could still finish 1 in the RPI even if Mayfield goes undefeated. I have heard it would be very close.

RPI rewards wins. If we assume both teams win out, Mayfield will have one more win than Beechwood.

RPI rewards wins over teams in higher classes. Again, assuming both teams win out, here is the way the wins over higher class teams stack out:

Mayfield - 6A = 1 win; 5A = 1 win; 4A = 3 wins; 3A = 1 win; 2A = 4 wins

Beechwood - 6A = 2 wins; 5A = 1 win; 2A = 4 wins; 1A = 2 wins

Mayfield will have 6 wins against higher class teams to Beechwood's 3. In RPI, is 1 6A win + 2 1A wins better than 3 4A wins? I actually could see that being pretty close as I think about it. But even if that works out even or slightly in Beechwood's favor, Mayfield will have one more win that adds points for them. It may be closer than I thought when I first saw your post, but I still will be surprised if Beechwood beats Mayfield in RPI with both winning out.

Here is a thread from last year where we tracked 2A RPI:

The one thing to watch is those wins over the bigger schools are weakened by their own overall records. They may be bigger schools but only one team on Mayfields schedule has a winning record. Multiple teams are winless and some of the higher class wins have lost to lower class opponents.

Just something to consider
