I agree!   Flores did a very good job in Florida and just didn't get the credit for it.

On paper, he's a far superior choice.   

I'd pick him in a heartbeat.

BUT....to throw a bit of a level-set out there....all owners are not bad owners, racist, or even "good-ol' boy" just because they don't make a singular pick that complies with society's mood of the day.     

Not defending the owners - I am, after all, the one who just made the comment about avoiding sweeping generalizations - but indicting the owners en masse isn't correct, either.

Absolutely and I'm gonna be furious if McCowan is the choice. I seen on a Houston Texans facebook group page that Gannon (Eagles DC) was supposedly informed that he isn't getting the job so that would leave it to Flores and McCowan.

As stated earlier, very few coaches are hired into a good situation. Most are coming in because the team isn't performing up to the owners expectations. 

NFL owners want to win, period. If a Martian could win 12 games every year they'd hire them.

Being that we haven't had that many, I'd venture to guess that their average would actually be longer since Tomlin really skews the small sample size.  And if we look historically, guys like Marvin Lewis and a few others that had pretty long stints probably skew it as well.

Off the cuff, here's what I'd propose...a dead period in hiring.  Six weeks from the end of the regular season before you can sign anyone.  Gives a ton of time for interviews to be done, and has less of an impact on deserving coordinators who have their teams in the playoffs.

I would hope most owners would look at that six week period as a positive, in the sense that they can find not only their best fit, but also their second best and third best, etc.  Heck, you could easily interview 10-15 prospects over that time period if you wanted to.

I like the idea of it, but the NFL calendar is designed in a way that it doesn't make it feasible.

Not saying there aren't potential issues with it, but what's on the calendar that couldn't be moved?  I mean, we've got teams that are still formally without a coach right now.  What would an extra 2 weeks impact?  The combine?  (Asking seriously, not sarcastically)

Scouting, NFL draft prep, and free agency being the most important. These sports' calendars are designed in a way to bolster the most interest possible by "owning" certain months. The NFL is on the cusp of adding an 18th game and probably an additional bye week for teams. That will have the season ending late February (regular season mid-to-late January), just before FA begins.

Not sure how important the combine is. But the scouting, free agency, and time leading up to the draft is vital. Teams aren't just hiring a head coach, but coaching staffs.

NFL owners want to make money.  I’d argue most don’t care about winning as long as they make money.
