BGP Ranking: South Warren (#2) Frederick Douglass (#1)

RPI Ranking: South Warren (#4) Frederick Douglass (#2)

Series History: First ever meeting

This 5A Championship is between two of the newer programs in the state. However, just because they are newer doesn't mean they haven't been very successful in their short times. This is the 11th season that South Warren has had a program and this the 5th season for Fredrick Douglass. South Warren is playing in already their third title game and they come into the game a perfect 2-0. The Spartans won the 2015 4A title over Johnson Central and the 2018 5A title over Covington Catholic in both title years the Spartans finished a perfect 15-0. The Frederick Douglass Broncos will be playing in the 2nd state title game in only 5 years and their 2nd in the last 3 seasons. The Broncos fell to Covington Catholic 14-7 in the 2019 5A title game. The Broncos will be completing their 5th season on Saturday and in the schools history the all-time record is 55-8. The Spartans of South Warren has a great program history as well their all-time record going into Saturday's game is 116-25. The Spartans in their 11 seasons have only had 1 losing season and it was in their first year (2011). Another thing that both programs have in common is that they have both only had 2 coaches in program history. Spartan coach Brandon Smith is 103-14 at South Warren replacing coach Mark Nelson. Bronco coach Nathan McPeek is 20-3 in his 2nd year as head coach of Douglass he replaced Brian Landis.

The Spartans are lead on offense by quarterback Caden Veltkamp  and running back Kobe Martin. The Broncos on offense are lead by quarterback Samuel Cornett and wide-receivers Dane Key and Ty Bryant. Both teams throughout the season have put up huge numbers on offense South Warren has scored 535 points in 14 games for an average of 38.2 per game. Frederick Douglass has scored 497 points in 14 games for an average of 35.5 per game however, 2 of the Broncos 13 wins were only 1-0 scores due to Covid cancellations. While both teams are more noted for their offensive prowess they both have very good defenses as well. The Spartans have allowed 220 points in 14 games for an average of 15.7 per game. The Broncos have only allowed 102 points in 14 games for an average of 7.2 per game.

This should be one of the better games of Championship weekend at Kroger Field this coming weekend. I think this one as well as the Boyle/Johnson Central game and especially the Beechwood/LCA game should be good ones. I think which ever team can limit their mistakes physical/mental will win. Will it be the 3rd title for the Spartans in only 11 seasons or the first for the Broncos in only their 5th season. No matter who wins both these programs can be proud of the success in such short periods of time. Best of luck to both programs!

I'll take South Warren by two scores. I've surprised even myself at how easy that pick was. The perception of 5A has been reshaped over the last few weeks more so than maybe any other class. There's p

South Warren plays defense like Boyle County, and we know how that went for Frederick Douglass. I'm going with South Warren by 2 TDs.

Completely agree with this.

FD defense is solid, but their offense is way too sloppy and relies too much on one player.

South Warren will win by 10-14+.

I’m going with South Warren in this matchup. I’ll go Spartans 27 Broncos 21.

I thought Southwestern would possibly upset FD and was way wrong about that.  But man I'd hate to try and beat a team with Brandon Smith as the head coach and Chuck Smith as an assistant.  I'm gonna have to take SW by 2 scores.

Now I will have to go with South Warren.  Your prediction cinched it!!

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is as bad as the Boyle/Freddy game.  I don’t think Freddy D has a chance.

I expect South Warren to dominate and I am with you PP92, I don't think the Broncos have much of a chance.

@PurplePride92 and @theguru, do you all think SW's offense is as good as Boyle's?

I am not qualified to say.

It was good enough to hang 45 on Woodford!
