Coach Ty Scroggins - Died of COVID

Recommended Posts

Just want to stress this note about Coach Scroggins.

Until 2007, Zero... None. Zilch... ZERO African American Coaches had won a KY State Football Championship.

Scroggins was the first to do so.

He then did it four more times to make sure that the bar was properly set!

This man was a legend.

DeSales High School honors assistant football coach Ty Scroggins with a memorial scholarship. Coach Scroggins passed away on February 10 following a short COVID-19 diagnosis. The DeSales community is saddened, along with the greater Louisville area, and seeks to honor his exceptional legacy.

“Ty will be sorely missed by the DeSales community not only in football but as a leader and role model to our young men. Ty was a great man, father and football coach. Although Ty’s life was cut way too short, we were blessed to have him here at DeSales for the past four years. He will always be a DeSales man,” said DeSales High School Athletic Director Don Bowers ‘81.

As a graduate of Fairdale High School, Coach Scroggins was a part of the state championship basketball team during his years as a student. At the University of Louisville, Coach Scroggins continued his love of football and played linebacker from 1990-1994. He began his head coaching career at Doss High School before transitioning to Central High School, where he coached five state championship teams.

In 2017, Coach Scroggins joined the DeSales football team as an assistant coach, coinciding with his son, Jayden ‘21, who began his freshman year and would play multiple sports at DeSales. For the next four years, Coach Scroggins would coach his son on the field at Paul B. Cox Stadium.

“Ty is known by everyone to be a great football coach, but when he joined our staff in 2017 we quickly realized he was an even better person. He not only had a tremendous influence on the young men he coached, he had that same positive influence on everyone who knew him. The coaching staff and I are heartbroken by his passing. We have lost a very dear friend that all of us truly loved,” said DeSales High School Head Football Coach Harold Davis ‘82.

Coach Scroggins leaves behind three children, Jayden, Jordan, and Mikalya as well as fiance Sheri Duff.

“The DeSales community joins all of Metro Louisville in mourning the loss of such a great coach and role model for our youth. We are thankful for his dedication to our football program and proud of his work in the community as a longtime educator and founder of the KY Minority Coaches Association. We hope to honor his legacy for years to come with this scholarship,” said DeSales High School President Dr. Rick Blackwell.

In his memory, the DeSales High School Ty Scroggins Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a minority student who seeks a Catholic school education. Contributions to this scholarship may be made online at https://donate.onecause.com/supportdesales or by sending a check to DeSales High School, 425 W. Kenwood Drive, Louisville, KY 40214.

Please remember Ty and his children. He took care of a bunch of kids, extremely well, in his lifetime. Time for the rest of us to help take care of his children.
