One thing I have learned in life is just because someone is great (and Mueller was beyond great) doesn't mean they give good hiring recommendations.  Loyalty, friendship, bias, obligation, etc. are all considerations when you are assessing recommendations.

Can you give some examples about impressions from an interview? What stands out or what sends up red flags? 
 

Back to my other post about the whole “great coach” thing. I’m just throwing two examples out there. 
 

If you look at Wolfe he checked a lot of boxes. Has won everyone has been but it’s his time at Male that puts him up there. He has gotten to and won titles in 6A. Has beaten Trinity. He is a HHS guy (which makes me think of being a Michigan Man). Would his resume been good enough before the Male years for people to be excited about him?

 

Now you take Barth that has done very well at Walton. He too is a HHS guy. If he hasn’t hit the ceiling there he is more than likely pretty close. Mainly his teams sure aren’t under achieving. I’ve seen people knock him as a candidate due to not going deeper in the playoffs, getting to the title or things like that. How many guys out there would have Walton performing better? The other knock is he has been running the wing-t for a long time I believe. 

People just view the two very differently and I’m just using them as examples  Two very good coaches but they appear to be viewed very differently

Correct. Beechwood superintendent Fred Bassett retired after the '07 school year and was replaced by the high school principal, Glen Miller. They hired Ginger Webb to replace Miller. Webb had been the principal at Campbell County High School and Campbell County had elected not to renew her contract as principal for the following school year.

Webb left Beechwood to be assistant superintendent of teaching and learning in Fort Thomas Independent after the '12 school year, and then split for NKU after the '17 school year. Sounds like everywhere she goes, she leaves a trail of "we're glad that's over with" behind her.

I wanted to comment on this specific piece.  In 2018, a very good Glasgow team went to Walton Verona for the 3rd week of the playoffs.  I clearly felt Glasgow was the better team by a couple TDs easy.  But Walton Verona won that game 18-14 in a big upset to me.

To win that deep in the playoffs against a team I feel was clearly better than the Bearcats says something to me.  You still have to have the Jimmy's and Joe's to win it all.  But can you win a game your not suppose to with the Willie's and Waylons????

I’d love anyone with clear cut facts on what exactly Ginger Webb did at Highlands to hinder BW to speak up. Otherwise, it’s all speculation and an excuse.  I know it wasn’t Ginger Webb’s decision to play a platoon system and have the 3 best athletes only play defense. Not saying it was all BWs fault, maybe there was a drop off in talent, which happens. Or maybe there were budget cutbacks and enrollment issues facilitated by Webb, but no one has presented any factual evidence of this. Could just be that he wasn’t the right man for the job and it didn’t workout. I’ve heard many more opinions that support this, as opposed to an administrator undermining the program.

Things I might look for in an interview are discussing philosophies and how you will institute them, discipline and how it will be addressed, expectations of the kids and the administration and most importantly what kind of human being are they.  Just some random thoughts off the top of my head.

Not really germane to the discussion, but I was just talking about this with one of my HHS buddies. Mayfield pulled ahead of Highlands for the #3 spot this season.

1.) 939 - Valdosta (GA)
2.) 914 - Male
3.) 907 - Mayfield
4.) 906 - Highlands

Paducah Tilghman was tied for 32nd place with East St. Louis (IL) and Leominster (MA) at the end of the '19 season with 794 wins each. Then Tilghman took over as the sole possessor of 32nd place at 798 wins because Amarillo (TX) jumped ahead and nabbed the #31 spot with their 799th win this year, and then MA and IL cancelled all high school football for the fall and are supposed to circle back and review whether or not they can play in the spring....so Tilghman may or may not drop a position or two before the end of this school year.

Danville and St. Xavier are both in the top 50 nationally for wins, and Owensboro cracked the top 50 this season, jumping two spots to 49th all-time with 772 wins.

Three out of the top four are Ky schools, I can live with that.

The geography of the three KY schools is interesting to me. Some really nice teams and fine players over the years. Had the pleasure of officiating games that each played over the years.

You sound like an individual that should be on the interview "committee". Have the interviews began or just scheduled at this point?
