Covington Catholic plays host to Bowling Green in a semifinal clash of brand name bluebloods.

 

The Colonels (13-0) continued their reign of tyranny over the last ten games with another first half running clock, this time over Madison Southern in the quarterfinal round. They look focused, unwilling to waver in their commitment to the mission - getting back to Lexington. CovCath is seeking its third consecutive trip to Kroger Field.

 

Bowling Green (9-3) had the stiffest challenge of the 5A quarterfinal round, traveling to Crestwood to face a hungry South Oldham squad. The Purples emerged victorious, 28-14, to return to the semifinals for the first time in three years after advancing at least that far in five out of six years from 2011-2016.

 

The last time these two shared the field, CovCath bested Bowling Green at Cardinal Stadium to hoist the 3A championship in 2006.

Hope BG can pull it off but knowing the players that Cov Cath returned from last year. Seeing them play last year and if Tisdale broke his hand I give the advantage to Cov Cath.

This one will be closer than expected. BG put up a fight against Trinity, even tied it at one point. They are a formidable opponent. I still expect the Colonels to win handily, but definitely not to the same extent as the past 4 games.

Looking at the names, most would think this should be a close game. Not to be. Bowling Green just isn't as strong as they have been in years past. Cov Cath wins this by at least 3 TDs.

 

If BG wants to have any chance, they need to look at the Lexington Catholic tape. Forget about trying to run the ball against Cov Cath. Throw it on every down, spread it out, throw quick passes, attack the edges and hope you can execute that without turning it over. If the QB sees nothing in 3 seconds, throw it away and try again. Don't take any sacks. If BG runs the ball 15 times or more (not including QB scrambles), they lose.

It will be a tall task for Bowling Green. The Purples have found a way to scrap it out in the final weeks to find ways to win. And that's important and that's what matters.

 

Looking at CC schedule I would have said BG had a decent chance. However with the reports of Tisdale having broke his hand last night, that's just too big of a loss on the road to a team of this caliber.

 

Plus the BG offense sputters too much and makes too many mistakes. This feels like a 24-7 win for CC.

If Bowling Green has a quarterback the caliber of Beau Allen, your plan might work. But CovCath has shuffled personal and adjusted schemes since the LexCath game. The defense in the flats has tightened up quite a bit.

I think Covcath wins. However, the one thing that helps Bowling Green, is besides maybe when Covcath played LaSalle. Bowling Green at least has played a schedule that probably has them more prepared to play a team like Covcath than most teams who have played Covcath so far. With games against St. X, Trinity, two games against South Warren, and South Oldham last night. They have played a top notch schedule. So it wont be this shock value of seeing a team as talented as Covcath.

 

They will need to have a defensive effort similar to what Highlands had against Covcath, but obviously do better on offense than they did.

BG’s schedule has prepared them for this game but I just don’t think they can do enough to pull off the upset in this matchup.

I have a lot of respect for the CovCath program and its hard not to follow how they are doing on BGPs.:lol2:

 

BG has had many issues to overcome this year and thankfully many have finally been ironed out in the last 2 games, but they are still making needless errors (penalties and miscues mostly) to give teams too many chances to hang around. If that continues (and maybe even if it doesn't), this contest will be over early and not in BGs favor.

 

I have not seen 1 game or 1 lick of film on CovCath. Is there any to be found where I could watch a game or 2? Highlights are ok, but in those I already know what will happen, I'd rather see a real game if available.

 

I already know CovCath is well coached and has terrific players and strategy and well deserving of the #1 5A seed. I think BG will have to play a perfect game in order to have a chance in this game. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am here this year anyway. But I expect BG to compete with Vito Tisdale or without. Whether they are up 7 or down 21, I expect them to compete and that's what I will be looking for Friday.

Got it. A team needs a game plan and yours may be as good as any. Just not sure how much it helps a team not built to execute it.

This game has been moved a 6:00pm kickoff as well.

I voted for BG but didn’t know Tisdale had suffered an injury.
