I’m a little surprised to see winless teams with some RPI points. I was under the impression that the game result was multiplied by the formula result. A loss is worth zero and if you multiply the formula result by zero it’s always going to be zero. So do teams get points even if they lose the game?

Win % .35, Opponent win % .35, and Opponents Opponents win % .30.

Does the class/division of the opponent matter in the RPI?

Using the RPI for seeding is disastrous. This is a joke, right?

Exactly what I was thinking.

From what I understand, no.

I agree.

Judging by the KHSAA's formula and some 7th Grade PEMDAS, everything within the formula is either multiplied by 0 (loss), .5 (tie), or 1.0 (win).

If everything is a loss then everything should be multiplied by zero.

Win % .35, Opponent win % .35, and Opponents Opponents win % .30.

Here is an example (made up records)

Team record 0-4, winning percent 0 x .35 = 0

Opponents record totals 12-4, winning percent .750 x .35 = .2625

Opponents opponents record 32-32, winning percent .500 x .3 = .150

0 + .2625 + .150 = .3125 RPI

Using the RPI for seeding is disastrous. This is a joke, right?

How is it any more of “a joke” than seeding the third and fourth round based on being in an odd or even district/region as it’s been since 1959?

Here is an example (made up records)

Team record 0-4, winning percent 0 x .35 = 0

Opponents record totals 12-4, winning percent .750 x .35 = .2625

Opponents opponents record 32-32, winning percent .500 x .3 = .150

0 + .2625 + .150 = .3125 RPI

Here's the issue though, Per the KHSAA this is the formula:

Each game RPI = GR*((0.35 × WP) + (0.35 × OWP) + (0.30 × OOWP))

Total RPI is summative

GR=Game Result. 1.0 for a win, .5 for a tie, 0 for a loss

WP=Winning Percentage of the Team being reviewed

OWP=Opponents Winning Percentage

OOWP=Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage

The math you just showed is all well and good for the calculations inside the parenthesis, but all of those results are supposed to be multiplied by either 0 (loss), .5 (tie), or 1.0 (win) for the "GR".

If a team posts three losses and no wins than their total should be 0 + 0+ 0 based off this formula.

Or am I missing something? I may very well be with this newfangled formula. LOL

There is a wrinkle I am missing in my interpretation and calculation. They definitely are not multiplying the formula by 1, .5 or 0.

My interpretation above is close but I ran the calculation on a couple teams and my number was off the KHSAA posted RPI by a little bit. How are they factoring in out of state opponents? That may be what I am missing based on the two attempts I made, because both teams I used had games in the opponents chain against out of state teams.

Unless someone else figures it out first, I will play with it and try to figure out the nuance I am missing. I think two teams to compare and find out the answer are Pineville and Kentucky Country Day. Both teams are 4-0. Pineville's RPI is .535 and Kentucky Country Day's is .812. Both have played a weak schedule with opponents that have few wins. Why is the RPI number so different between those two?

Pretty sure all out of state opponents are assumed to be with a .5OO winning percentage.

Does Trinity get penalized for out of state schedule? Is there a chance they could lose a head to head against, say STX, but beat Male, but get jumped by someone because there only a few in state teams who will schedule them? Not Familiar with RPI that much just seems like it sets up for issues when it comes to their schedule.

2A RPI Top 10

1. Somerset 0.784

2. Newport 0.782

3. Mayfield 0.731

4. Beechwood 0.719

5. Owensboro Catholic 0.698

6. Caldwell County 0.697

7. Middlesboro 0.697

8. Breathitt County 0.695

9. Martin County 0.662

10. Washington County 0.658

Newport and LCA are the perfect case study so far for why this system needs to be tweaked a little.

The fact LCA is not Top 10 in the RPI really exposes the principal flaws in the system and points out all my arguments with it.

The Eagles are 3-1 and have done exactly what the KHSAA would ask a program to do. They scheduled "up" and have played a 4A playoff team (Moore), a 6A Semi-Finalist (Madison Central), and a 3A powerhouse (Belfry) which was their only loss in a game they competed in throughout. They also played a playoff team from another state. Calpreps has them as having the 4th hardest SOS in Class 2A so far.

Martin County is 3-1 just like LCA, but by contrast their wins have been against lowly Betsy Layne, Phelps, and Magoffin County. Their lone loss was to a pretty solid Harlan County in a game they were beat soundly.

Newport is undefeated, but their wins are over two weaker 1A teams, a 2-2 Harrison County team, and a 2-1 Carroll County team.

By comparison, Calpreps has Newports SOS in the bottom half of 2A and Martin County's SOS in the Bottom 20%.

There has to be some sort of power factor assigned to these numbers.

If Martin County played LCA's schedule they would be 0-4. If Newport played their schedule they might be 1-3, but most likely 0-4.

Out of State Teams are a slippery slope.

When you play very good Out of State teams who traditionally play tough schedules themselves (Which is what Trinity does), you do not get the proper credit for scheduling those games as you should.

When you play Out of State teams who post good records, but are more conducive to being wins (ie smaller schools, schools who play weak competition)... then you get an unnecessary bump.

Strictly from a RPI standpoint Trinity would be better served playing more teams like the Illinois team they destroyed than playing Top 200 team nationally like Carmel. Carmel would also beat that Illinois team like a drum, but from a RPI standpoint the Illinois team may be just as valuable as a win, but if you risk a loss to Carmel, that could really hurt you.
