With few exceptions, it seems to me that most (not all) kids commit because of the coach(es) not because of love and loyalty to State U and/or the value of a degree from the school. With a radical coaching change, it might better for the kid to peddle his wares elsewhere as he and the staff would probably be incompatible. Hopefully, plan B (next choice) for the kid is still available.

Well first of all, his statement didn't mean he was going to take every KY kid that wanted to come to Louisville. It only creates a bad optic if you are looking for something to complain about. The program, as a whole, was very shut off during Petrino. High school coaches couldn't come watch practice, he rarely visited any in-state recruits, held no camps, etc... He's already visited several schools in Louisville, something Petrino never did in his time here.

 

Just because Satterfield said the program would be more open doesn't mean he has to take every KY kid that wants to come. That's ridiculous. He also doesn't have to honor any offers extended by the previous staff.

 

If Satterfield pulled a scholarship from a kid from North Carolina and gave it to a KY kid, would this thread exist?

 

First, slow your roll. I don’t have a dog in the fight and could care less about UofL football, they made their bed in bringing Petrino back and the results speak for themselves. Second, never once did I say he should have honored the scholarships, it’s his team and his right to honor them or not. My point was the comments he made last week were encouraging for a lot of players who are extremely good in the state who could have strong interest. My comment was centered around the optics, but again that’s his prerogative. Again, only have 14 scholarships this class is going to be very small to begin with which further illustrates his need to pick who he really wants.

UL football is not going to relevant for some time due to the damage Petrino left it under. Recruiting is national which is should be but kudos to the new coach for at least making an effort to engage with HS programs and players that are in his home state.

Obviously it sucks to see these guys get their scholarship pulled, especially in the case of Jack Randolph as i'm a FS guy. Personally, I think the biggest cause for concern is the fact UofL only has 4 guys committed for 2019. From looking at this thread, it seems like it's a bigger deal due to the fact instate kids had their scholarship pulled.

If you're going to throw shade and talk about optics, at least make sure you know what was actually said... Satterfield said in response to recruiting the City of Louisville, not the state:

 

Question: How much emphasis will you place on recruiting the City of Louisville?

 

"Huge, it is huge for us. There is some great talent here and again that is why I am talking to the high school coaches right here in Louisville and are welcome to come and watch us practice. Come over here we are going to have some things this spring in spring practice that we are going to open up to high school coaches. Come clinic and meet with some coaches, it won't cost them anything because I want our staff to get around these guys, because I want these players that are playing around here in high school to feel like they have a home right here and they can come to play right here, meet all their goals and aspirations right here in Louisville."

 

As far as not being relevant for some time, yeah... We heard that about basketball too. We see how quickly that's been proven wrong.

It’s not an unreasonable analogy, but a lot of these relationships between coaches and recruits start when these kids are 15 and 16 years old.

 

But while no one likes this, no one wants this to be fully contractual because no one with any sense would say that a high school kid ought to be completely bound by his early commitment either.

I wouldn't be surprised if they add several Jucos.

This type of thing happened to me when I was in HS with baseball. Lelo Prado, previous HC at Louisville, was recruiting me. When McConnell took over I was informed I was no longer being recruited. It happens, you get over it and move on.

Any smart person absolutley would take all their visits, and make sure to make the best of the relationships of all schools recruiting them until they sign the LOI.

This thread is just the latest example that people are always looking for something to complain about.

 

This happens with every coaching change. Every one.

I think that what this thread shows is that far too many people feel that their word is no longer their bond. The university gave its word. The athletic director went to these kids and asked them to stay on board for the new coach. The signing day is ten days away. I think it would be absolutely appropriate for the coach to tell these kids that he would honor their scholarship offers, but also let them know that they were not a good fit for what he plans. I refuse to believe that kids backing out of commitments in any way justifies the university breaking its word. Someone used an employment analogy. That works for me. As an employer if someone applies for a job and says they would welcome a chance to come to work for me, then turns down an offer I move on to the next candidate. They may not be as good. They may not be easy to find, but I move on. On the other hand, if I make an offer and the candidate turns down their other offers or maybe gives notice at their current job, then I change my mind and withdraw the offer, that candidate is left scrambling for a job. Maybe they are scrambling to pay their mortgage. As an employer, I just wouldn't do it. Period.

The business is slimy and double sided all the way around. A lot of times the Coaches involved pressure the kids into committing by saying things like "If we offer you, you have x amount of time to commit or we are offering someone else in your position." "If you commit and take other visits, we are pulling our offer." Trinity Alum IMO had the best response. Kids are going to back out and change their minds...Colleges after their season has ended and Coaching Changes are made, should stand behind any prior offers/commitments!
