Pompilios in Newport, but it still seems to live off of its historical hype, and that a scene in Rain Man starring Dustin Hoffman, and Tom Cruise was filmed there.

 

It was good years ago, but apparently the grandmother who made it so has passed on, and with her went the quality.

 

In the last 15 or so years I haven't ever had a good meal there. I don't even bother anymore, but they still seem to pack them in. The meals always seem to come across as greasy pedestrian versions of Italian food.

 

Good for them that they can still attract a crowd based on their name and hype, but for me it's a no go.

 

I'm no restaurant snob by any stretch, but it always cracks me up when I hear people suggest Pompilios in an excited way while wiggling their eyebrows as if the place is incredible. I suppose that they bought into the hype too.

 

Me and my lady recently ate at Pompilios and it was freaking fantastic, one of the best meals we have had in our 9 months of dating.

 

CFA...solid food, good fast service, but overrated. All the Cincy style chili places overrated. I'm not sure Applebee's can be overrated since almost EVERYONE hates it.

Ruth's Chris, Bern's, Roy's, Fleming's, and Eddie V's are all overrated. Never been to Jeff Ruby's, but I doubt if I can get a better meal than any I've had at Daddy's Grill. Most of these places are much ado about nothing.

 

I used to love Bern's. It is still a good restaurant, but no where near what it was when Bern ran it. You're not paying for good there, you're paying for great. David is just not his father. He has let the little things that meant so much to Bern and Gert, and made it so special, slip away.

 

 

Portillo's. It's OK, but Mel's Hot Dogs, near Busch Gardens, has better Chigago style hot dogs and they're not overpriced.

 

Beef - hot - cheddar - dipped please. And their fries are awesome.

 

 

 

 

 

B-dubs to me is the most over over rated place on the planet. They are over priced and everything they serve is mediocre at best.

Chick Fil A way overrated. Yeah its a solid chicken sandwich but I really don't understand the obsession.

 

Chipotle deserves all the credit and praise they get! Lol I am a little biased as I eat at Chipotle probably 3 or 4 times a week.

Dick's Last Resort is terribly overrated. And terribly overpriced.

Cracker Barrel. I've been there 4 times and have never had a good meal.

If I am in need a case of e coli, Chipotle's is where I head. I find it fascinating that this restaurant's long history of association with food poisoning has done nothing to hurt it's brand. I think I'll go to Moe's, tomorrow.

We have a saying in my family that if you eat at Chipotle today, you cannot possibly have a bad day. E coli chicken/steak bowls are the best!

Honestly, I never understood the whole point of that place to begin with. I've never been interested to go, and I don't know if there'd ever be anything to get me interested to go.

 

I'm with you. The only reason we went was because my daughter had been given a $25 voucher when she went with some friends during their opening week at the Newport location. My daughter warned us that it wasn't so great, but we figured worst case was we'd get a cheap meal. We still spent nearly $50 out of pocket, and the staff was at best, not funny, and at worst annoying. Plus service was slow. Not a single redeeming thing about that place. It's probably the only time in the last 20 years I haven't tipped at least 20%.

Actually, I'd say I like their food. Decent cheap burgers, their buffalo snack melt is solid, and I don't mind their breakfast burrito one bit. I think they have better fries than Wendy's and Burger King, both.

This is good to hear because admittedly I haven't tried them in quite awhile because of too many bad experiences. Maybe they got it together again, and got back on track. Looking at Yelp some echo what I've said, while others seem to like them a lot, sooooo....:idunno:

I agree 100%. I still regret going there even though my daughter wanted the experience to be cool with her buddies...and that was more than a year ago. I'll never, ever go back.

Most of the chains. I have many friends who are head over heels for Red Lobster, for example; but when you're pretty much raised on seafood, they get a solid "meh" from me. Same for Olive Garden. Chipotles. CFA.

 

And at the risk of alienating my NKY friends once again, "Cincinnati chili" is glorified hot-dog sauce.

Agreed on all points. We go once a year or so, but it's definitely for the atmosphere. The food is extraordinarily average.

 

Give me one of the Melini Cucina locations a hundred times out of a hundred if you're talking "just the food".
