February 19, 20188 yr I had this question asked to me today at our clubhouse: Why do many of the countries in the Olympics, such as Japan and China, have their country’s name on their sports apparel written in English instead of their native language? I didn’t know the answer but I know BGP will have it.

I didn’t know the answer but I know BGP will have it. English is the international language of business and diplomacy. It has been, since the end of World War II and the formation of the UN. English is a required second language in most European and Asian countries. Because of that, it is the most commonly used language in the world. It only makes sense to have the names on the jerseys be readable by the most people.
February 19, 20188 yr I must admit my ignorance regarding Adam Rippon's age. I had no idea that he was 28, and all along had been assuming that he was more like 18 or something. Part of my initial assessment of him acting like he was so seasoned was my mistake of thinking that he was so young when he really isn't. He seems to have been the media darling all week, and while I'll reiterate that his campy way is nothing new when it comes to effeminate gay guys, he generally held himself in a likable enough way that should set himself up for more Johnny Weir type TV time in the near future. They're both vain attention grabbers, so it'll be interesting to see if they can share the spotlight together without it turning into a cat fight. I can image that with some straight guys it's still a bit too much to stomach. I was fine with him standing up for his beliefs, and not hiding who he is as it helps to usher in a new era that should hopefully ultimately result in one day no one caring one way or another. It's really just a time for a reality check because who didn't know that traditionally tons of male figure skaters were gay, but with that said it shouldn't be assumed that they all are. In a way now it's probably assumed that they are until proven otherwise, which probably isn't fair to those who are aren't, but not that there's anything wrong with it if they were. LOL Ultimately the dude was talented and entertaining on the ice, and all said an done that's really all that matters anyhow.
February 19, 20188 yr Really got a kick out of the Czech girl, Ester Ledecka who won gold in the women's Super-G downhill ski and didn't realize that she had. To make it even better she's really a snowboarder who was using borrowed skis to accomplish it. While all of the other girls were intently competitive in the event, she comes along late in the competition and skis like it was just a walk in the park, and then looks dumbfounded when she's informed that she had won, and was certain that it was all just a mistake. :lol2: One of the best highlights of the whole Olympics.
February 19, 20188 yr Russians defeat Norway for bronze in mixed doubles curling. After watching it, the one rule change that I wish they'd make in this instance is that you are either a.) the thrower, or b.) the sweeper, but you can't be both on the same stone. Seemed like there were several throws from both teams where the man threw it, then jumped up and swept it all the way down. The only thing the woman did was shout instructions. Seemed very one-sided in those instances. Russians tested positive .....oops.
February 22, 20188 yr Stayed up to watch the start of the women’s hockey gold medal game between the US and Canada. USA scored to take the lead with about 30 seconds left and i thought I might go to bed at intermission since it was already almost midnight. I didn’t and Canada scores to make it 1-1 barely a minute into the second period. Ok, universe. I’m going to bed now.
February 22, 20188 yr USA women win Gold over Canada in Dramatic fashion on shot 6 by Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson in the shootout and a stop by Maddie Rooney the US goaltender.
February 22, 20188 yr I hate when the Olympics is on the other side of the world. Would have thoroughly enjoyed watching that Women's hockey game last night but I didn't make it more than 10 mins into the first period. Glad they won gold though!

I was able to catch the entire OT period and shootout. Great ending!
February 22, 20188 yr I’ve found in the Winter Olympics, that I prefer all the women’s events more than the men’s. Aside from the women’s sprint and swimming events in the Summer games, I usually just watch all the men’s sports. Anyone else preferring the women’s events in these games?

I think a big part of it is that most of the women (from all countries) have such dynamic personalities. They draw you to them on a personal level, so you feel more vested in them.
February 22, 20188 yr Boom. US Men's curling team just upset Canada in the semi-finals. Hockey & Curling in the same day? Sucks to be Canadian today! :lol2:
