It would probably work just like the All A does...teams play Region All A games in early January and go to the All A Tourney in late January. It doesn't impact district or region games in any way.

 

I know how the All A works, my school has been to state. That's not what I took the sentence to mean.

Per Warbeagle- Perhaps have the tournament game "count as a true region game". Did Warbeagle mean take the place of one regional game if that team wins their District Tournament in March?

St.X has most boys of any school and lost to DeSales by double digits last night, so the small schools can beat the big ones

Agree... how many basketball playing schools are there? It has to be over a third playing in the A.

I'm looking at the list of schools this tournament is targeting, and it is interesting to say the least.

 

I especially took note of this one, because it's where I am:

 

Region Five – Bardstown, Thomas Nelson, Hart County, Elizabethtown, LaRue County, Adair County, Taylor County, Nelson County, John Hardin, Marion County

 

Bardstown is back in All A Classic competition this year, as consolidations have dropped them into the bottom 125 in enrollment in the state (not 120 as the article linked in the OP states), and Bardstown has a long history of success in the All A. Given their 'druthers, I'd say they stick with the All A.

 

Also in the 5th Region are essentially the top four favorites this year to take the overall region crown: John Hardin (currently T20 on BGP), Adair Co., LaRue Co. and E'town (past SW16 winner), as well as Taylor Co., the 3-time defending region champ. Bardstown is a little down from what they're used to this year, but they are also a regular contender for the overall 5th Region title.

 

Examining this list some more finds historic statewide powerhouses such as:

• LexCath (No.13 BGP and a past SW16 winner)

• Warren Central (past SW16 winner, 11 region titles)

• Paducah Tilghman (No.12 BGP and winner of 26 region titles)

• Holmes (SW16 winner and a slew of region titles to its credit — more if you count Covington and/or Covington Grant with those)

• Mason Co. (15 region titles and 2 SW16 crowns, generally the dominant team in the 10th)

Corbin and Clay Co. (each with state titles and historically the 2 dominant teams in the 13th)

• Ashland (historically the dominant team in the 16th, with a state title to its credit)

 

 

Sooooo … what again is a tournament such as this hoping to accomplish for the Webster Countys and Union Countys and similar-type schools around the state? Don't Union County's best winter athletes opt for wrestling anyway?

The All A began when there were only four football classes and the same enrollment numbers as football at the time were used. Since football has gone to six classes, almost all of the 2A football schools qualify for the All A Classic.

Same amount as ST.X. None.

Because since 1918, now Kentucky is one of two states, the other being Delaware, who do not have State Classed Tournaments in basketball. It's the possibility of David vs. Goliath.

Not sure why we see the hate for this. The all a hasn't ruined the sweet 16. Why would this?

 

How about the family that can afford to go to one tournament out of town but not a second one. I'm betting it has a direct correlation on attendance drop at the Sweet 16.

About what I thought. Just short of half. The A isn't what it set out to be anyways and sure it's a 'small school' tournament anymore... So whats the point anyways then of the A, or the 'new' 2A ? 125 playing in the A, and now another 66 playing in the '2A'... Thats 191 of the 270 anyways...

Sorry, but participation trophies aren’t a recent phenomenon, and classing sports doesn’t mean everyone get a trophy. It’s a lazy argument, and one that doesn’t hold any water.

This is the perspective I needed. Thanks Jim. I’m with you. I’m not sure what this tournament is hoping to accomplish other than making some folks some money.

In the end, it's just another in season tourney...albeit larger than most, that gives teams something else to play for.

 

If the All A had been named the "Papa John's Small School Challenge" or anything without reference to class there would be zero people butt hurt about it. If this new tourney was called the "Midseason Invitational Classic" and invited schools under 1000 on enrollment but too big to play in the aforementioned "Papa John's Classic," no one one would be upset about this either.

 

It's just because of the use of A or 2A that seems to get everyone in a tizzy. FWIW no team is forced to play in these, they have the option of not playing.
