Here is the catch...these games Thursday will be impacted by heavy rains and likely a lot of lightning with them causing delays, and likely being postponed.

Saturday? The thing moves out of here, but only after it's dumped 3-6" of water across a lot of the state = The worst of field conditions.

Games tomorrow should be fine. Rain isn't supposed to move into the Louisville area until 11:00pm or so. Farther west a bit earlier, obviously, but still plenty of time to get the games in.

I get that schools are trying to prepare for this and still be able to have a full season of football. But honestly, this is likely just going to be a rain event, not an entire evening of thunderstorms.

 

So essentially now we're at the point that kids can't even play football in the rain. That's getting a bit too sissified for me. Ashland didn't play their JV game Monday because, you guessed it, it rained. Game was scheduled for 6pm, the rain stopped by 6:30 and was just a light drizzle when the game was scheduled to start.

Moving non-district games to avoid weather seems silly (and soft) to me. I tend to agree with JD on this one.

Might just be me fellas, but I'm not really into the idea of my son getting blasted by lightning during a game because some old school administrators decided getting a game in is more important than the safety of the kids.

KHSAA SEVERE WEATHER POLICY FOR ACTIONS BY OFFICIALS AT OUTDOOR SPORTS

The Referee (Lead Official / Crew Chief) shall stop play in a contest or scrimmage at the first sound of lightning or thunder at the site. The playing site shall be cleared immediately of all persons. The contest or scrimmage may be resumed following a three (3) minute warm-up period, no sooner than thirty (30) minutes after the last sight of lightning or the last sound of thunder.

 

If the severe weather is of great length or intensity, the Referee (Lead Of? cial / Crew Chief) shall work cooperatively with home contest administration on decisions related to the resumption of play. Contest officials are encouraged to learn the weather forecast prior to contest time and to work cooperatively with home contest administration prior to making weather-related decisions. Safety of the public and participants is the most important factor in any decision of this type.

Thanks for that....again, the forecast clearly calls for severe thunderstorms. It's not 1985 fellas. Safety first...good lord.

I don't think we are talking about a "normal rain." IMO it is the right decision to find the best projected time during the weekend to play. Forecast may still be off a few hours but the rain is coming. 5 to 7 inches in 48 hours expected in our neck of woods.

I seriously don't think the entire state will see 5-7 inches of rain. In fact, I seriously doubt that the majority of state will see more than an inch or two of rain over the entire weekend.

You guys that talk about softness or silliness or whatever else you mentioned have to consider this from several angles. Safety, finances, labor, and litigation are all concerns of a school district - though usually not something the casual fans considers.

 

Most schools fund a portion of their athletics with ticket sales and football ticket sales are the largest at most schools. If moving the game makes the weather safer or more comfortable, wouldn't you in theory have more fans in the stands, thus providing more revenue to help pay the various athletic bills that come up?

 

In a similar vein, if you move the game one day and it keeps the field in better shape, thereby making it safer for players in the next three or four home games, wouldn't you do that?

 

If there is a chance of storms and you're expecting 1,000 people sitting in metal bleachers, wouldn't the school district's attorney recommend maybe moving to a night where it is safer for spectators?

 

I don't know if moving to Thursday or Saturday fixes the problem entirely. There are numerous problems that could still arise. But if it keeps some of the above from happening, why wouldn't a school postpone to a better date?

You are just concerned about playing conditions? How about travel over flooded roads? Hazardous road conditions? Storm debris in travel path?

I wouldn't mind getting to shoot a mud bowl game every once in a while, but agree 120% that the player safety takes priority, and preventing the destruction of the field a close 2nd.
