September 26, 201610 yr Vacuum broke down again, maybe got a little more than a year out of it. I think the youngest girl dropped it or something recently when she moved out, but broken none the less. Anyway I can't seem to keep a vacuum very long before the thing goes bad/breaks. So went to Wal-Mart yesterday to get something else. Ended up getting a mid-priced (definition, not the cheapest) model that seemed to actually work pretty good when I got it home, better than the old one did when it was new. However, they did have a Dyson model there that I thought about getting, about $300. I mean, if it lasts 6-8 years it would probably be no more expensive in the long run that getting a new cheaper one every 1 1/2 years or so, and they are supposed to clean really well. But if it peters out in 2 years then I have spent a lot of money I didn't have to. So, in your opinion is a vacuum something worth investing a little money in and will pay of in the long run? Or just go the cheaper route and hope it last more than a couple of years?
September 26, 201610 yr I have had several vacuums over the years since buying our home 12 years ago. I've owned Hoovers, Kenmore, Bissell, etc. None of these seemed to work well for very long. Finally spent the money and got a higher end Dyson ($500.00) a few years ago. It has by far been the best vacuum I've ever owned.
September 26, 201610 yr My only advice, not much of advice here.... Buy the one you want, whether it be the pricey one or the economic one. Just buy it and be done with it.
September 26, 201610 yr We have the Dyson pet and have had it for years. It works great with dog hair
September 26, 201610 yr I'd go middle of the road. I've had a shark for a the past 6 years. It's great.
September 26, 201610 yr I bought a reconditioned commercial vacuum cleaner 20 years ago. Still works perfect. If you've got a repair store anywhere around I would recommend looking into it. Give a call to Cheaper Sweeper in Frankfort or A1 in Lexington, and see if they have any available.
September 27, 201610 yr Love my Shark Rotator. My dog sheds like crazy and this vacuum really gets it up.
September 28, 201610 yr 2-3 years ago we bought a reconditioned Oreck xl (from Kirkwoods sweeper) and it has been fantastic. This is an upright sweeper (no attachments). Around $150.
September 28, 201610 yr Don't buy a Kirby!!!! I let a slick door to door salesman con one of those heavy over priced contraptions to me and I've never liked it. Cost me $1800 and isn't any better than an old 20 year old Electrolux that I still occasionally use. I'll never ever buy anything again from a door to door salesman unless it's something to help high school kids or girl scout cookies.
September 28, 201610 yr I would suggest a Hoover windtunnel 2 bagless. It is the best vacuum I have ever owned. You can get them for as low as $99 on sell. It has been rated a best buy by Consumer Reports for several years. Sucks up everything and is great on pet hair.

Over the past 20+ years, I have owned two vacuum cleaners - both middle to lower end Hoovers. The first cheap one lasted more than 15 years. Then I bought the bagless Hoover you mentioned. They work fine and last.

We went through a few of these before giving up on them...work great out of the box, then for us not so much later.

September 28, 201610 yr We have a dyson. It doesn't fit my hand so I'd have to defer on it's effectiveness.
September 28, 201610 yr I have bought cheap and expensive vacuums. I have come to the conclusion that you get what you pay for and I like reliability. I do not have a Dyson, but I sounds like a good one.
