Teen Suspended For Filming Fight at Scott High School

Featured Replies

Was reading about this on fb last night and tons of post from Scott parents about how awful the school has become. Gun threats have been made fights described as gang fights. Remember just like 2 years ago test scores were in 40s and kids who wanted to learn walked out to take up issues with school board about lack of discipline. Scott is a complete mess!

Its not just Scott, its a district wide problem.

While inept might have something to do with it in the case, the issue of sharing pictures/videos in a school environment when not authorized to, is a very real problem.

Food for thought-

A child/children and parent have moved away from an abusive situation and the parent wants nothing about the child on social media.

Witness protection. Very real issue with kids and parents that I never even thought about until I had to deal with an issue coming up my first year of teaching.

I think everyone has a right to record/video a crime in progress and no governmental agency should be allowed to stop you.

Correct. And if they still did this, they'd most likely face a reprimand (detention) and have their phone confiscated and the video would've been deleted. No need for expulsion talk or suspension.

If so, it would be a felony for the school to delete any evidence of a crime.

You'll also forgive me for not buying the lass' story that she was trying to show how unsafe the school is or how the staff failed in their duties.

The linked video also states the person who posted this to FB was not the one who filmed it. After she saw the video, she posted it to her FB so others could see the teachers did nothing. I am sure the video was originally not to show social injustice.

Did the 2 kids fighting get suspended?

It reminded me of a hockey fight. They let them fight but as soon as they hit the ground the refs jumped in.

Did the kid who recorded the lunacy on her phone take it to the school administration? Or did the kid immediately post it for everybody to watch?

If there is a policy against recording things at school and showing them on social media, the kid violated that policy and has consequences. If teachers allegedly stood by and did nothing, that's a big problem as well.

Not all parents believe this. They've moved ahead of SK in test scores. I've had two kids go through Scott, well prepared for college, and doing very well, and a 3rd who is in his sophomore year, and on the same track. Spend some time there and really observe what's going on before you label the place a complete mess.

Seems we all watched a girl from Ballard last year I believe beat on a teacher with it being recorded and plastered everywhere. Was that student called on the carpet for something similar? How about the kid who did the same when the cop/safety officer flipped the girl who wouldn't leave her seat like a cheese omelet?

The legal issue here is that you are protected in a school setting from having your picture' date=' video, etc. unless you give consent to allow it. Parents sign that every year with their opening day packets. There are students that are for various reasons not needing to be seen by others. There truly are some students at risk from others seeing them. If a student, teacher, school personnel, etc. put a picture or video on social media it could lead to something awful. Therefore, the district has to protect itself by doing whatever they can to respond. We live in a very different time.[/quote']

Good info

The kid who filmed it didn't post it. The girl's friend posted it on her own FB according to linked article.

I must have missed that. If so, then the original post title is somewhat misleading.

On a slightly different note, how can the girl in the black pants avoid assault charges? Would seem to be a slam dunk case looking at the video. Good lord, how many times does she kick the other girl, who is not only lying on the floor, but has someone else holding her down!

It's hard for me to tell how long teachers were there while the fight was going on before they got involved, but I will say that whoever had the responsibility for getting this girl away from the one on the floor seemed to be doing it half-hearted.

If it can be proven teachers watched while a child was being beaten my lawyer would be calling Scott .
