Wilmore asked to remove cross from water tower by Freedom From Religion Foundation - The Jessamine Journal: Local

 

 

The City of Wilmore has been asked by the Freedom From Religion Foundation to remove the cross mounted on top of a water tower at Asbury University.

 

In an email received by Mayor Harold Rainwater on Sept. 29, FFRF staff attorney Rebecca Markert warns that “it is unlawful for Wilmore to display a patently religious symbol such as a Christian cross on public property.”

 

“The Wilmore cross, displayed on the city water tower, unabashedly creates the perception of government endorsement of Christianity. It conveys the message to the nearly 30 percent of the U.S. population who are not Christians that they are not ‘favored members of the political community,’” Markert wrote, citing a Supreme Court Case from 1989, which found that displaying a nativity scene on government property violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

Because they are intolerant of other people's beliefs.

Here's an idea, why don't they just not look at the water tower? Then they wouldn't get offended.

I don't know guys , I've been driving a different route to work so I don't get offended by the symbol on the local mosque . Insert dripping sarcasm here .

And I can no longer spend money with that God stuff on it .

Because their religion does not allow them.

I hope they don't take it down. That would be a shame.

The thing that makes this unique imo is that Wilmore is so closely tied to Asbury College/Seminary. Hence the reason the cross is there in the first place. It would be different I think if it were on say the water tower of Danville, KY or Harrodsburg, KY. Those cities have no tie to a Christian college/seminary.

I hope it stays up. Is putting up a cross, a symbol that to Christians represents love, really that bad of a thing?
