Bruce is available for trade according to Reds

One of they two, cozart or suarez has to play CF next year. Winker/Byrd in left. We can't go another year with Hamilton out there offensively.....this team can't hit enough to carry him.

Heck, I'm not even sure that Cozart will hit enough to take a spot. Pitching is going to be bad so the 'defense up the middle' line won't work. You've got to score 4 to have a chance. 5 to win most nights.

Cozart can't hit. He's a plus defender at SS but he's a .250 hitter with 15 HR pop and an OBP that struggles to reach .300. I'm so tired of hearing about his break out year, he ultimately would've ended up statistically on average with what he has done his entire career. This isn't directed at you, I'm just simply agreeing with you're statement that not even Cozart will hit enough to earn a spot. He's probably the worst overall hitter on the team other than Hamilton. Before Suarez he was the only option at SS. Now that Suarez has arrived Cozart has no business being the starter at SS or any other position really. His best position would be a utility infielder. I'd much rather have Hamilton in CF than Cozart, he's a better defender there for sure considering Cozart has never played the position and Hamilton is nearly just as effective as a hitter minus some pop. Next year is a rebuilding year and it's one more year and maybe the last for Hamilton to prove himself capable of hitting big league pitching.

So Cozart can't hit but Barhart is a professional hitter? :lol2:

That post got me curious @AverageJoesGym

In the month of August the Reds have the following slash lines:

BP: .324/.370/.426

Suarez: .290/.333/.565

Votto: .268/.431/.536

Frazier: .164/.197/.299

Bruce: .149/.186/.284

Byrd: .180/.215/.311

Pena: .281/.378/.344

Hamilton: .224/.278/.306

So 4 of the starting 8 are under .300 OBP for the month, and 2 are under .200 OBP. That's historically atrocious. :lol2:

Yikes, that's even worse than I thought.

Runners on 1st and 2nd and Bruce strikes out. Took 7 pitches to do so but he swung at all 3 and none were close to strikes. Not one of the 7 was a strike. That dude just goes up and takes hacks. He's Adam Dunn minus the power and the cool nick name.

No way! Not Jay Bruce.

I'll take a + defender hitting .250 w/ 15 HR at SS. OBP is less than desired, but not sure what you want from that position (with what the Reds have and are willing to pay).

No way Winker breaks camp with the Reds in 2016. At best, he gets the Kris Bryant treatment so his clock doesn't start ticking a year early. More likely, he spends at least half and maybe until SEP at AAA. No reason to rush a prospect like that up to a club that may lose 100 games.

If BP is not moved in the offseason, decide between Frazier and Suarez at 3B and LF based on what makes the best defensive combination. Neither is a long term solution at that position and is just being placed there to keep getting ABs during a lost year.

Hamilton plays CF and may not switch hit. Defense and SB are too valuable to an already offensively challenged team. No reason not to run him out there during a lost year to see if he finally catches on. If he doesn't, you'll have 3 yrs. of data telling you he is just a pinch runner and defensive replacement instead of just 2.

I saw on Twitter that Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler has had a "setback" after his TJ surgery.

Why this thread for that post?

Why this thread for that post?

Because Wheeler was the player rumored to be coming to the Reds for Bruce last year....

And Bruce probably has his value at an all time high at this point considering the market.

Meanwhile Schiebler has been tearing it up at Louisville where he's getting consistent AB's.

Bruce is on pace to have a career year in R,H,3B,HR,RBI,AVG,OPS,SLG and Total Bases.

At $12.5M this year and $13M next year, he is a bargain with this production. He'll be 30 at the end of this contract.

So 3 questions.

1) What will it take to sign him next contract?

2) Should the Reds look to resign him and continue to build with him as the RF of the next 6 or 7 seasons?

3) What could the Reds realistically get out of him at the trade deadline this season and who are the best bets to pursue him at this point?

1) I'd imagine $15M+ a year.

2) No. That'd put him in his late 30s by the end of that contract. Would put them in the same situation they're in right now.

3) I think they can get an organization's top 10 prospect and one to two mid-lower level guys for him.
