Did the NFL Punish ESPN for the criticism of its anchors Simmons and Olberman?

Featured Replies

Evidently, there is feeling that ESPN was dealt a slew of uninteresting games for it's Monday night slate in retribution for the commentary of its now former broadcasters Olberman and Simmons.

If this turns out to be true, my contempt for the NFL, and this commissioner, will be at an all time high.

The Bengals managed to land two Monday night games. I believe this must be true.

Don't believe it for one second. To "punish" ESPN would be punishing themselves. The slate of games seem normal to me.

I've always felt the SNF games were more interesting than the majority of the MNF games anyway.

I'm with you. The MNF games have been crap for about the last 2-3 years. Especially with the advent of the Flex Scheduling used by SNF late in the season. I even think we have discussed how MNF has fallen off in threads these past couple of seasons.

The bigger issue is that we need to stop referring to ESPN as a "news" organization. They're a business who got rid of two outspoken critics of the NFL commish. I've got no problem with that as long as we all realize the truth.

Michael Smith and Jemele Hill better be careful. I love their show.

I am so happy they got rid of Olbermann...my least favorite person at ESPN, by far. He just seems like a miserable human being. My guess is they got rid of him because his ratings were low, not because of his NFL opinions. Not sure though...

If this is true then they are definitely trying to punish them.

Hey the Bengals have a winning streak going currently on Monday Night Football of one game lol

And it sure was a fun game to be at, even with the rain.

To me, the schedule looks no worse than it has since MNF was moved from ABC to ESPN.

ESPN is looking for excuses for losing viewership, so they are trying to manufacture a conspiracy where there is none.

MNF starts too late for me. I must be getting old. Rarely make it to half time anymore. Kickoff should be 730 EST. Who needs 2 hours of Gruden in the pre game show anyway.

If this is true, then the NFL had been getting back at the NFL years before they even had NFL games and MNF because the MNF games have been horrible for a long long time.

Way to go NFL! lol

Seriously, the idea's that the NFL is trying to hurt their product on purpose by putting bad games on National TV is silly.

I don't make it all the through many Monday night games anymore either. Usually halftime is when I pack it for the night, unless it's a game I really care about. The problem with moving kickoff up to 7:30 is that puts the start of the game in rush hour/the commute home from work for the Mountain and Pacific time zones and the very end of the commute for the Central time zone. That would hurt ratings considerably. The current kickoff time is the best compromise for a 4 time zone country.
