May 27, 201511 yr What songs make the hair on your arms stand up and give you that lump in your throat? We all have them. One of the biggest ones for me is "More Than A Name On A Wall" by The Statler Brothers. Gets me every time. Then I ran across this Daily and Vincent version of that song, and WOW. Especially near Memorial Day.
May 27, 201511 yr Feel free to click any links to listen...but be warned...the songs on this playlist should be enjoyed at your own risk. Avett Brothers - Murder In The City I wonder which brother is better...which one our parents loved the most. I sure did get in lots of trouble; they seemed to let the other go. A tear fell from my father's eye. I wondered what my dad would say. He said, "I love you and I'm proud of you both in so many different ways". When my legs no longer carry, and the warm wind chills my bones, I reach for Mother Mary, and I shall not walk alone. Every nerve in my body is so vacant and numb. I can’t even remember what it was I came here to get away from. Don’t even hear a murmur of a prayer. It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there. Everything that happens is from now on - this is pouring rain, this is paralyzed. I keep throwing it down two-hundred at a time. It's hard to find it when you knew it - when your money's gone, and you're drunk as hell. Me and Franky laughin' and drinkin' nothin' feels better than blood on blood Takin' turns dancin' with Maria as the band played "Night of the Johnstown Flood" I catch him when he's strayin' like any brother would Man turns his back on his family well he just ain't no good She has a dad she doesn't know, who sends her letters with no return address. I don't know his name, he don't know my face I am better off this way. Lord do me a favor, it’s wrong but I ask you, take my brother’s life. Do you realize, that you have the most beautiful face? Do you realize, we're floating in space? Do you realize, that happiness makes you cry? Do you realize, that everyone you know someday will die? I had a real good mother and father, and they surely stood the test. And now are in bright glory, and are sleeping on the Saviors breast. Now there's something goo in a worried song, for the trouble in your soul 'Cause a worried man who's been a long way down, down in a deep dark hole Mamas and grand mamas love you, 'cause that's all they know how to do. You never planned on the bombs in the sand, or sleepin' in your dress blues. When she was drunk she made cancer jokes, she made up her own doctor's notes. Surrounded by her family, I saw that she was dying alone. John Prine - My Old Man (Steve Goodman Cover) And now the old man's gone, and I'd give all I own to hear what he said when I wasn't listening to my, old, man. Ryan Adams - Jesus (Don't Touch My Baby) Jesus, don’t touch my baby…she’s all I’ve got. Dialing you up in my sleep when the nights wearing thin, won't make it right. My reasons to want to, And 100 reasons to lie when I don't want to While I'm staring at pictures of you, while I'm staring at pictures of you. It doesn't get any lonelier than this. I believe my heart will break. Tonight I prayed I'd die before I wake. Tuesday night at the Bible study We lift our hands and pray over your body But nothing ever happens Though the cabs here, they can't take me to your house, I get directions and pretend I was somewhere else. All the sweethearts of the world are out littering the bars, And i am still avenues from any place you are.
May 27, 201511 yr No fooling... My Old Kentucky Home. Every. Single. Time. When at Churchill Downs on Derby Day, absolutely. On Mother's Day I was at Mass and the teenage daughter of a Trinity teacher was cantor. After communion she sang the Ave Maria. It was AWESOME. A very difficult song with lyrics in Latin. Not a dry eye in the place, including the priest. I was very close to my maternal Grandfather. He was very devoted to St. Francis of Assisi. At his funeral the cantor sang the Prayer of St. Francis. I can't hear that song anymore and keep a dry eye.
May 28, 201511 yr When at Churchill Downs on Derby Day, absolutely. Oh it's terrible for me. A few months ago I went to see the Cincinnati Pops as they did a night of music by Stephen Foster. They closed with My Old Kentucky home and I about lost it up in the balcony. They also play it as the players come out onto the field at Louisville City FC soccer games. I was blubbering in the stands. It seriously gets me every time.
May 28, 201511 yr Times of your life - Paul Anka They kept playing it for the Mad Men finale teasers...fresh in my mind...
May 28, 201511 yr Forever Young-Rod Stewart. It says everything I want for my children. It means so much to me, it's the song I picked to dance to with my son at his wedding.
