Maybe it was ignorance, but hard to believe. She lives in Cleveland, where the use of that word would put her in her place quickly by all races, not that there aren't racists there. But it is very diverse metropolitan area. I think she just slipped up and said it, no defense, she was out of line.

I also think it's a stretch that she had no idea of the meaning; although for the life of me I don't know why she would use the word if she did. So there's still some doubt in my mind.

 

About like not knowing the context of this character's name (M*A*S*H*).

It is blatantly obvious she did not know it was and she had no ill intent. I don't know her or if she is any good or not. I just hope this does not ruin her career.

I consider myself pretty "with it" I didn't know it was racist.

I'd love to know the situation she was in where she heard that word, used it correctly on air, but yet wasn't aware it is an offensive term.

 

I'm going to start using that excuse for blacks when they say racist stuff now. :lol2:

This is not a situation where she was caught saying something offensive to friends where she did not know she was being taped. She was ON THE AIR. There is no way she knew this was a derogatory term.

I would add that use of such a term might result in termination of her job. Why would anyone intentionally risk that? I think she is probably just a product of the sterling education system we have in the good old US of A.

The more I think about it she probably meant to say Lady Gaga's previous music was "jiggy" instead of what she said...similar sounding but very different meaning. Jiggy means more "sexual" which Lady Gaga's previous music has been.

She obviously just didn't know the meaning of the word. She said it with a black anchor 1 foot away from her. Not that big of a deal. Just mark it down as ignorance with no malintent.

We all have our own bubbles I guess. In my bubble I am acutely aware of every offensive word known to man and I also have the wherewithal to not use them in a public setting.

I'm glad that this thread is here or I would not have known. It's not like it's on the the list of pronouns or Latin roots that are drilled in school. Maybe schools should begin to teach a course on "offensive racist slang terms".

That's where I learned all my offensive words. Sometimes in class. Mostly at recess though.

Yes, As we all see, there are A LOT of ignorant people out there, and many of them will use words that they have no clue what they mean.

In second grade at recess one day I called one of my buddies something (won't post what) I'd heard on the Little Rascals, he punched me in my eye! :lol:

 

When my dad asked why I had a black eye and I told him, he told me that I was lucky that was all that happened to me.

That's what I was wondering. That's a hell of a bubble for one to live in to not know that word is offensive.

 

I agree it seems crazy someone wouldn't know that. But white people both left and right who grow up in their white bubble sometimes really are numb to what it is racist because it isn't prevelant in their lives .

 

It was dumb but you always look at intent behind the word. Do I think she meant to be racist with a black Co anchor next to her ? No. I just think she is ignorant and doesn't have many friends outside her bubble .
