Who doesn't know that term is offensive?

 

To my knowledge, the only time I ever heard that term would have been when I was, maybe, 11...many, many moons ago. (I recall it vividly because of the repercussions that went with it.) It's not hard for me to believe someone didn't know the word and, therefore, wouldn't have known it was offensive.

I didn't know it was a racial slur until i was in 6th or 7th grade. I found out the hard way.

For those saying she didn't know it was offensive...

 

She had to hear the word somewhere, right?

 

I can't think of a scenario where the context surrounding the use of said word is anything but offensive.

I'm apt to believe she was "ignorant" to the word. Had Morley Safer said it, then no.

29 years old and I know that word is offensive.

 

I could see how some would not know the meaning of that word. My aunt for example, in her early 60's, is extremely religious and one of the most naïve people you could ever meet. I honestly don't think she would know that word was racist. In fact, I doubt she could think of a racist term for any race outside of the "n" word.

According to Wikipedia, Kristi Capel was born in 1983...in Florence, Kentucky!

 

She also competed in the Miss USA pageant (as Miss Missouri) the same year that Tara Conner from Kentucky won it.

I suspect she had heard the word before in relation to African-american music and incorrectly assumed it was an adjective describing that genre' date=' rather than a racial slur. Given how many racial slurs aren't in use today that were once popular, I'm not surprised. For example, I was unaware that 'spade' could be used as a derogatory term until I used the idiom 'call a spade a spade' in reference to an African-american person. Thankfully the only person there to hear was my father, not a TV audience. He seemed shocked and explained the matter to me. Since then I haven't really used that idiom much.[/quote']

I have to admit, it is a long time since I heard that word. It would seem that there would be some education for journalists that would inform them about the history of words and which are offensive that would help to make up for lack of life experience or maybe common sense.

 

Regardless, she made the mistake and apologized. Now if she slips up again, then that's another matter.

Agree. She gets an exemption because of her young age. The term was highly derogatory during my youth ... which was quite a while ago ... but it's been decades since I've heard it.

Same is true for me.

Bubba Smith thought it was racial in Police Academy and that movie came out in 1984.
