She used a word that she didn't know was a word? How is that supposed to make sense?

I also think it's a stretch that she had no idea of the meaning; although for the life of me I don't know why she would use the word if she did. So there's still some doubt in my mind.

When I was a kid I had no idea what they were even calling him...then later as an adult watching reruns I couldn't believe what they were calling him :no:

That's what bugs me.

I knew the word but have not heard it in many years. Fwiw, I asked my 15 and 13 year old and they have never heard the word nor what it means.

I'm not excusing ignorance . She is ignorant. She knew it was a word. I just think she was dumb on how bad of word. I just struggle to understand the motive of career suicide by using it.

I can tell you for a fact white people of all political back grounds are ignorant to racial conversations. The higher income whiter the crowd the more ignorant they are .

 

It doesn't excuse her saying it. I just don't think when she said it she had racist intent using logic of the circumstance.

It's amazing and sad the things blacks/women had to do in order to have a chance in Hollywood.

I agree it seems crazy someone wouldn't know that. But white people both left and right who grow up in their white bubble sometimes really are numb to what it is racist because it isn't prevelant in their lives .

 

It was dumb but you always look at intent behind the word. Do I think she meant to be racist with a black Co anchor next to her ? No. I just think she is ignorant and doesn't have many friends outside her bubble .

 

I grew up in a bubble. It was called "Military Housing". The family next door was Black. Upstairs there was a Hispanic family. Down the hall was a Jewish family. These were all my best friends, playmates and classmates. Everybody was pretty much equal. Everybody's dad's boss was the base commanding officer. We really did not have racism in my "bubble".

 

At 18 yrs old, I went to college in downtown Milwaukee. That was my first time living in the states. My first impression was the racial divide of the city and all over the country.

I would venture to say if you can't believe she was unaware of what the word meant, you're probably 45 (give or take)+.

 

Cut her some slack.
