This was a local Fox affiliate. Not Fox News. While owned by the same parent company, I do not think Rupert Murdoch is sending marching orders to a local affiliate in anywhere USA as he is perceived to do with Fox News. If that were the case why wouldn't he censor Family Guy? Maybe I am wrong though. Does your local Fox affiliate peddle in this type stuff?

Yes because I don't buy her "I didn't know act". She's heard that word before. Somebody taught it to her and there is no other meaning for the word at all other than for it to be a derogatory mark. You can't confuse the meaning behind the word and for her to use it the way she did tells me that she has heard the word used before from someone who is racist or even possibly from someone who is black. Not to mention that if she truly didn't know that it was a disparaging word why would she even use it? Hell, her first apology was, "I'm sorry if I offended you." Not, "I'm an idiot and I never should have used a word that I had no clue what it meant." Why would any self respecting person in broadcast journalism use words that they have no clue about? Is she trying to be Brian Williams now or something and just going to start making stuff up on the fly? :lol2:

You think the woman's career should be ruined over this? I am stunned. She OBVIOUSLY had no malice in her heart when she said it - she made a mistake. She was taken off the air for 3 days. She knows to only use the word around the person who taught it to her now.

 

How many people say "jig" without knowing it can be deemed offensive? She should be punished just to show the public accountability. However, I do not have a hard time believing a person her age didn't know the term was offensive.

My first thought was she confused the offensive term with "jitterbug."

She clearly wasn't trying to hard or offend anyone. What she said was not okay, she will be corrected.

 

I've come to learn that no matter what the story or subject is, someone will always take offense to something. "America is soft." I've seen you post that here, PP. It seems to hold true.

I'll be honest, I don't know what is considered offensive anymore. One group can say this, other groups can not. This is Ok among close friends, but not among casual friends. This word has changed meaning, but no one told me. I don't know what is alright and what is not. Call me ignorant or whatever, but I don't sit around and think about it, and I don't search for alternate meaning of words before I use them. I think if you want to be offended, you will be.

That's fine. My wife doesn't agree with me on everything and she LOVES me.

 

My beef is that it is now easier to be openly racist and claim ignorance and get away with it. Not saying she is being openly racist because she's just openly stupid but the stage is now set for folks to plead naive and it be excused. Hell, as a black person who has been called that word and other racial slurs this whole situation is extremely aggravating but...this word slipped by a ton of people so the whole "ehh, no biggie" attitude just sucks. This whole thread is why the phrase "it's a black thing, you wouldn't understand" was such a huge phrase back in the day. I guess we need to have new t shirts made. (Paging FUBU)
