I'm 40 and I have used the term "call a spade a spade" before and had no idea whatsoever that it had any racial connotations.

 

Well, it doesn't, but things are a bit complicated. I actually looked this up after being corrected. Not that I didn't believe my father but it piqued my curiosity. The phrase 'to call a spade a spade' means exactly what it's used as and comes from ancient philosophy. It's actually a mis-translation of 'call a basin a basin' but it means the same thing.

 

The use of 'spade' as a derogatory term comes from the phrase 'black as the ace of spades' obviously referring to skin color. Thus while 'call a spade a spade' itself has no racist origins it can be interpreted as such. Especially when using the phrase to refer to or in conjunction with an African-american like I did.

I know what that word means, but for the life of me, I have never heard anyone use it who isn't already dead now. And it absolutely does not define Lady Gaga's music. Weird word to pull out of her butt.

Many on here have given reasons...I guess you don't think they are plausible. A few of us have heard the word before but did not know the meaning until now. My guess is that describes her too. She could have been thinking "jiggy" or "jitterbug" or something like that and that word came out. She was not commenting on any person but was commenting on music. I assume you don't believe her. I do when she says she was not familiar with the word. I just don't see it as even remotely possible that she would ON THE AIR purposely use the word if she knew it was offensive...makes no sense.

My beef is that it is now easier to be openly racist and claim ignorance and get away with it. Not saying she is being openly racist because she's just openly stupid but the stage is now set for folks to plead naive and it be excused. Hell, as a black person who has been called that word and other racial slurs this whole situation is extremely aggravating but...this word slipped by a ton of people so the whole "ehh, no biggie" attitude just sucks. This whole thread is why the phrase "it's a black thing, you wouldn't understand" was such a huge phrase back in the day. I guess we need to have new t shirts made. (Paging FUBU)

 

Black people that use the n word are idiots too. Especially the ones that use it in front of white people in public places. And yes, that includes some of my favorite rappers who exploit themselves for money.

 

As a black male I don't find her using the word offensive, she was being honest and made a small mistake. I do take offense when white people tell black people what we should call one another. Why do you care?
