On the contrary, I would like to bring up the fact that Rudolph was definitely conceived while his parents were standing in a pool of radioactive material. While he was able to do things others couldn't there's no way he was able to survive that long with those chemicals running through his body. He wasn't lighting the way, he was burning a hole in the ozone and the moisture was escaping.

Hard to say. The reindeer were first written about in 1823. Similarly, the story of Rudolph's big moment was recounted in a 1939 poem. The reindeer could have been around long before 1823 and Rudolph's first trip could have happened any year between 1823 and 1938.

 

If Snowman Burl Ives is to be believed, the severity of the "storm of storms" as he called it, was unparalleled by any previous Christmas snowstorm, leading to the necessity of Rudolph's lighting the way. It's possible they never needed anything like him in years prior.
